Red Dead Redemption

So, I picked up Red Dead Redemption when it came out. As a game, it wasn't really on my radar, after how disappointing Red Dead Revolver was, and how terrible I found GTA IV. But still, I thought I'd give it a chance, and I thought it might waste a little time here and there.

How glad I am that I did.

This game is fucking amazing. It's a sandbox game just like one would expect from Rockstar, but it's sandbox finally done right. Imagine GTA merged with oblivion and Fallout 3, and then set in the wild west.

From hunting down bounties to wrangling wild horses to playing (and rampantly cheating) in texas hold'em, everything about this game is done well, and is tons of fun. There's always things to do, the story missions are fun, the side missions are fun, and you even run across random encounters which, surprise, are also fun. All set in a huge and beautiful world, with lots of homages to classic western movies.

And if anyone happens to have it on PS3, my psn tag is ravenpoe121. Add me as a friend, let's form a posse.

It is taking forever to get here! I'm getting it on the 360, so I can only posse up with folks there.

I also have it for 360.

And yes, it's incredibly fun. Multiplayer is a blast.

Does this have a real shooting/combat system, or is it like GTA in that regard? By real, I mean not just slapped in there as an afterthought, but actually designed to be fun.

I'm in the middle of it this game and it's SO FREAKING ADDICTIVE.

Yes, it has a real shooting system. The shooting in this game is actually pretty fun, which is a big difference from GTA. Gunshots feel solid, and every bullet counts, because it only takes a few shots to kill someone (yourself included).

There's also a cover system, as well as a "dead eye" bullet time - multi target system.

Yeah, it's a really damn fun shooting system. Not perfect, but very good for this sort of game.

*holds up two fingers* (you get a cookie if you can guess which classic Western that's from)

I'm on PSN and my tag is IronBrig4.

By the way, I never thought I could get excited about finding a patch of flowers. And I love riding around the desert, blasting every critter I come across and then skinning it. It kinda reminds me of Oregon Trail in that respect.

Alright... this posse thing... when I get home I'll add you guys and see where we can take this. I can't remember what my tag is, maybe espy*somenumber*? I'll find you guys though and we will ride with vengeance!

Fucking pirates. This is why we can't have PC games.

You don't have to read the whole article, but the #1 thing is very, very true. (If you are at work go immediately to the bottom of the first page to go to page #2. One of the ones on the front page talks about the NSFW parts of games and some images skirt the edges.)

Basically it says that game designers are ignoring the PC because it's not economically viable to do so.

I want to play this game and can't.

Some GREAT points in that article Dave. Really great.
Again, I have no problem with putting sex or sexuality in entertainment. Sex is part of life, so it should naturally be part of our movies and TV shows and games. But these are the digital equivalent of inflatable sex dolls. It's embarrassing and insulting, not because I'm a staunch feminist, but because I don't like the assumption it's making about me (that I'm an emotionally stunted, sexually frustrated teenage male). It's like even award-winning video games have the sensibility of made-for-Cinemax B movies.
I don't mind nudity and I don't mind sex, especially if it adds to the story (See: The Wire), what I do mind is rampant sexual objectification of women and the implication that if I'm a gamer I must not be able to get any so I need my pixelated boobies. I know thats an unpopular position but I think the writer hit the nail on the head with this one. Still reading the others.

EDIT: Just finished reading it... DAMN. His points about piracy are really great as well, especially about that indie-bundle. WTF people.

The article did make me realize I really need to get a monocle some day.

The point about gamers' sense of entitlement is dead on. Developers spend thousands of man-hours creating a game from concept to publication and pirates somehow think it should be free. And instead of looking under their couch cushions for change, thousands of gamers decide to steal the indie-bundle. Who the hell do they think they are?
