Republic of Doyle (New TV Show)

To any Canadians, or other humans with access to CBC programming: I wish to make you aware of a new show that will begin airing this Wednesday called The Republic of Doyle. It's a show about a character Jake Doyle who runs a Private Investigator business in St. John's, Newfoundland (the city where I live, in case you didn't know) with his father. I haven't seen anything other than a few ads that a friend sent to me on Youtube, but since St. John's is not exactly the typical setting for a television show, it's sort of becoming a big deal around here even before it's gone to air.

The ads make it look very ... Canadian. I'm not sure exactly how to explain that, but it seems like anything made by CBC has this same feel about it, from the acting, to the cinematography, to the pacing, to the dialogue. I really hope to see this succeed, and I hope some of you can catch it.

If anyone outside of Canada cares to view it, I'm sure episodes will find their way to surfthechannel eventually.

Here's a preview/ad/trailer/thing:

I waited to post on the first episode until I could get it on iTunes and watch it again. I have to admit that I was impressed. Not that it looked particularly amazing, but it looked better than I feared it would.

Some of the Newfoundland-isms were a bit forced, and many of the Canadian actors sounded like they were struggling with the accent. Shaun Majumder was great, although I find him difficult to take in a serious role. Allan Hawco was right on, considering he's from here and I think Sean McGinley is from Ireland, which means he shouldn't be having any issues with the accent.

I'll give the show a few episodes to come into it's own. CBC has ordered six for the first season, and I really hope it gets taken up for a second season. After seeing St. John's in the show, I can't believe so little has been set here before. This city has a lot of personality, and it feels like a lot of it is coming out in Republic of Doyle.

First episode is free on iTunes for Canadians, and it's also available at cbc.ca. Not sure where to find it for you non-Canadians, but I'm sure it's out there somewhere.

Show put on a bit of a hiatus for the Olympics. I don't know if anybody is interested, but episodes are available to watch online at CBC.ca. If that doesn't work, I have a friend who sent this link to her American boyfriend.
