For those Texans out there you may be excited about the upcoming election between the gubenatorial candidates Rick Perry and Bill White. As a Houstonian, I have a lot of love for Bill White. He's a business first moderate democrat, which is a great combination to me. Its hard to look at an ex-mayor of Houston, one of the largest and possibly best off (economically) cities in the united states, and think that he doesn't know what he is doing. He's from an oil town as well, which makes me think that he knows how to balance what's good for business and what's good for his constituents.
In the other corner we have Rick Perry, the kind of republican you would have expected to be George Bush's right hand man. He is an evangelical christian, who has argued for teaching of creationism in schools. He also is responsible for the ridiculous Trans-Texas Corridor project which has introduces toll roads to Texas, something that we have avoided since the inception of the automobile. On the other hand, he is a balls out texan, through and through, going so far as to vaguely mention Texas's right to seceede, and his administration has seen Texas maintain its economic dominance in the last decade. While he may be a George Bush republican, he has made good economic decisions in the face of traditional conservative values (being against the border fence as it would hurt trade.)
So its an interesting race. My hopes and wishes go with White, but my money is on Perry.
Anyways, here's the point. Perry refuses to debate White. This absolutely disgusts me. How is this even remotely acceptable? A candidate refusing to debate should pretty much disqualify the candidate in the eyes of the voters, and it saddens me that it hasn't.
Is this the new face of politics? I don't know how to describe it, but its part of a much larger theme I am seeing emerge in politics, where politicians get away with acts that are (for good reason) outrageous and wholly unnacceptable.
Edit: And my favorite part? Perry is saying that WHITE is refusing to debate. I mean....WTF?
