I hope he pulls through.*
Tom Petty actually owns a house about five minutes away from me. Or owned, I think he may have sold it a long time ago, but it's still on Petty Lane.
*edit: looks like he won't

Netflix US has a 4 hour documentary about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I think it's time for another viewing.

oh damnit man. I am a huge Petty (and Wilburys) fan. I play and sing (at home, obviously) Free Falling or Learning to Fly on the guitar nearly every night. I was just telling my wife on Sunday that I have to see him before he retires. Ugh.

TMZ is reporting he arrived with brain death at the hospital and he's been taken off life support.
He's gone guys.

Aw, man. That really sucks. He has such a great catalog of music.

Thanks for the hugs guys, but this news is nothing compared to Las Vegas. I don't know what to do with that news. The difference b/t sad news and devastating news.
I feel ya. Same thing happened to me with Kelly Freas and Chris Squire.
EDIT: dang it, who else just died? Oh yeah, it was Monty Hall.
Now we I guess we won't have to wonder anymore what's in the box. (I wasn't going to make a whole new thread for that joke)

Apparently he has NOT died yet and the LAPD has given out faulty information. But he IS still on life support. I guess. Who knows at this point?

I ... question the wisdom of keeping him alive for organ donation, if that's what they're doing.

After all that shit today, he's actually passed on now.
I had just managed to get back into listening to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, after being completely and utterly burned out on them due to the horrendous over-play in the Eastern Washington market in the mid- to late-nineties. Strangely enough, it was the documentary I mentioned above that both got me back into his/their music and clued me in to the fact that I'd been so sick of it that it had caused me to switch to country music at the time (we didn't really start getting Grunge until after Cobain's death in our little burg). Really had to respect him after hearing about all the times he's stood against the recording industry's shitty, money-grubbing practices; and there's no disputing that their music is great and Petty's songwriting was amazing. He will truly be missed.
