There has got to be some kind of in-joke going on there. Like the Wilhelm scream.

The one guy looks like Dr. Venture.

The thing that really makes it interesting, is that they cross-over Marvel and DC comics....

These two built a device that allows them to cross over into fictional universes. Being rather wise, though, they decided to place themselves near the action without interfering with their omniscient and omnipotent status as real-world readers.

One of the commenters on the article suggested that they look like Josh Flanagan and Ron Richards of the comic book review site/podcast/show iFanboy. I seem to recall that they mentioned owning original artwork of them as background characters. I guess they've been used more than once (though why Conor Kilpatrick would be left out is puzzling.)
