Selling books on Amazon?

So I happen to have way to many books. At one time it seemed very important to me to buy every book I thought I might actually read. Now, as I grow older I find that this was a serious mistake and it makes my back hurt to carry them from place to place.
So I want to sell them. I've heard that Amazon is, in general, a better place to sell than just running them to my local used bookstore.
Is this true? Is it worth going the amazon route? I've never done this before so any advice anyone has would be great.

Books seem to go incredibly cheap on Amazon and Ebay, with people selling them for a few cents a lot of the time, and some misjudged shipping means you could be paying for it instead of getting anything. Research what each book is going for to decide.

The books I had just weren't worth the trouble, so I gathered them in a big box and dropped it in the library's donation cart. From perusing their stuff previously, I noticed their dearth of sci-fi novels, so I remedied the problem.

Yeah, thats kind of what I figured. I thought I might look through amazon and see what books were going for enough for me to sell them there and then see if half priced book or the library wanted them.

I've had good experiences trading in books to Amazon, but that only works in cases where they actually want the books I have to offer. If they'll take them, you get a good deal (the last trade in was worth $5 in credit for a $15 hardcover novel). It's just that they're picky about which books they will take for a trade.

We have Half Price books in Dallas area :) I love it. You can sell your old books (little money but not much) or get store credit to get MORE books ;)

Yeah, we have half price here too, I'm thinking of taking all 120 books down there and seeing if I can get more than 20 bucks for them. Thats honestly why it's been so hard to get rid of them, because I know how little money I'll get and how much I originally put in to buying them. It feels like taking a huge loss but yet... I'd really like to trim down my library a bit...

You could look at Alibris. Books go for decent prices on there.

Also, while I am not made of money at the moment, I would be interested to know what titles/authors you have, especially any genre fiction.

Anything really interesting I'm generally keeping, I own lots of old Fritz Leiber and Lovecraft but those won't leave my dirty clutches. I might have a few odds and ends rolling around thought that I'll throw up on here to see if anyone wants them.

Alternately, you could write/stamp on the inside cover something like:

"I have enjoyed this book. I now leave it for you. Once you are done, please pass it on to someone else to experience."

Then leave them around your city. Coffee shops, bars, bus stops. Pass on the love. Costs you nothing. You may not make any money, but the positive feelings are priceless.

Lol, not a bad idea. What about the books I hated though? How about...
"This book sucks donkey-balls. Maybe you have worst taste than me though?"

In fact, if you want to get all artsy, you could push them towards a web site where they could post pictures of the book(s) and tell where they found them. Like a book version of "Where's George".

I would be interested in knowing what you plan on getting rid of and will probably offer you more than the local used-book store.
