I love this idea:

This thread could be just about this, but if you see some cool new gizmo, add it and I'll change the title to a more generic new idea thread.

NICE. I don't use liquid soap because I don't like to use antibacterial too much. This would really neaten up my bathroom sink.

Man, whoever came up with that is gonna clean up!

But it's not cow themed. Why would you be interested in it? *ducks!*

Oh, man, that's my new thing now?

Although if it had a cow print it would be very cute...

I don't know why cows have anything to do with soap :(

Isn't it made from fat?

Fine, back on the subject of hand soap:

soap made of fat is nasty

in case someone wants to get technical i mean animal fat

Not if it's made right. Actually, if you want to get technical all soap is derived from some kind of fatty acid. Animal fat based soaps tend to be more alkaline and "harsher" than vegetable oil ones, but again if made right, they're just fine.

#22

makare

The whole technical thing is why I went back and specified animal fat.

All the animal fat soaps I have used tend to not rinse of as well and as they deteriorate they do this funky clumping thing which is very unappealing.

Yeah, that's a result of hard water; not really the soap. Did it lather well?

Interesting - so the non-animal fat soaps don't react so poorly in hard water?

#25

makare

It's very lathery soap.

I don't think any soap reacts well in hard water, but you'll have a better time lathering up body wash liquid soap than you would a bar of anything.

I've actually seen this before in those 'low maintenance' situations like park bathrooms and such. Insert a bar of soap, spring pressure forces it against grinding wheels, turn crank for flakes. I'm surprised it's not more common, actually.

makare

Id much prefer this to foam soap in public restrooms. I like foam for the shower but not when I'm washing my hands.

#33

LittleSin

LittleSin

I find any foam or liquid soap causes me to break out into a horrible rash. I have to carry that anti bacterial gel with me every where.

#34

PatrThom

PatrThom

Removing the good bacteria from your skin makes it easier for the bad bacteria to give you a rash. Just sayin'.

--Patrick

#35

makare

But what is she supposed to do then? She uses the anitbac gel because the soap gives her a rash.

I used not wash my hands at all. I knew it was disgusting but the Russian Roulet I was playing with the soaps was making crazy...then old woman shouted at me in the bath room when she saw me try to walk out after just rinsing my hands with hot water.

That's when I got the antibacterial gel.

#37

If they could only make cheese soap now. Sorry to horn in on these puns but I thought this thread needed more cow-pun.

As I understand it, the mechanical action of washing contributes quite a bit to keeping your hands clean. If you diligently scrub all areas of your hands, you can walk away from the sink with a pretty clear conscience. Actually, even if you do use soap you should still scrub away.

Yes, soap is meant to reduce the surface tension of water, allowing the oil on your skin to mix with the water to flush away dirt and bacteria (won't kill them). Antibacterial soap isn't necessary. You could also try convincing people to wash their hands with boiling water to kill bacteria.

#40

PatrThom

PatrThom

Soap's main claim to fame is that each end of the soap molecule grabs onto water and oil respectively, allowing water to grab onto grease and carry it away.

I think you guys are missing the point. Its not up to LittleSin what kind of soap goes in the public washrooms, and everytime she goes, its a crapshoot of whether she'll have an allergic reaction or not.
I suppose you could bring a travel size soap, or bar soap in a travel case with you instead of the the antibacterial gel.

Nah. I'm just airing my dissatisfaction which the whole EVERY GERM MUST DIIIEEEE!!! mentality I am confronted with so often which results in every soap dispenser everywhere being filled with triclosan-laden soapadoom. So instead of being gentle on your skin, "public" soap often ends up being stinky, overly drying, and generally disgusting.

Hmm...bringing personal soap doesn't sound like such a bad idea, really.

My mom once bought me a little plastic container filled with these paper-thin sheets of soap. They foamed under water, and they were easy to carry around. I wish I still had some. Really handy.

#48

makare

Haha I had some soap flakes like that once. My purse got stolen out of my car and the only thing missing where those flakes.
