I'm looking to replace my fantastic "Fragmat"

with a new gaming mouse surface. The reason for the replacement, is that the surface has gained small lumps in the surface (I've had it for nearly 2yrs) and it's begun to bother me during precise movement. I'm debating between Razer and Steelseries stuff right now but I'm not looking to pay more than $30 for it. Couple things to note, I'm very fond of the "hard/plastic" surface type pads and not really the cloth type. I'm also a "medium sensitivy" gamer so I don't need to "multi-swipe" as some low sensativity games do which require very large mats.

Anyone who reads this can rest assured that I'm already out there, doing the google search and reading as many reviews as I can on just about all the products. If anyone here can speak from experience or perhaps second hand experience, possibly a place to purchase (I tend to favor Amazon) feel free to join me.

I'm curious about that "horrendous shuffle function." I had two mp3 players before getting my iPod. One was a Phillips, and the other I can't remember. I don't remember having an issue with the shuffle at all. Until I know what your issue is, there's no way I'd feel comfortable recommending either.

The one suggestion I could make, though, is to get one that's compatible with whatever music software you prefer. I liked the Phillips player I had specifically because my windows media player playlists would sync up with it properly.

I can't recommend an iPod, because a classic is out of your price range and that's the only one I have experience with. (It's good, but the lack of supported video and audio formats annoys me, and I think I'd prefer buttons instead of the control pad; it takes a frigging beating though.)

Horrendous shuffle means I have 200 songs on the playlist. It's on song #34, the mp3 is set to shuffle, I click "Next" and it plays song #31, I click next again, it plays song #36, I hit next again it play song #30. Basically a shuffle that can't seem to leap around the playlist more than 3-10 slots.

I don't recall either of mine having that issue, so I'd imagine newer models wouldn't suddenly have that problem. And looking up mp3 players on Amazon right now, I was able to recall that my other mp3 player was a Sandisk . . . I'm pretty sure of that anyway.

Hope springs eternal... I thought this would be about lingerie.

Silly me.

I've got a SteelSeries SX and I love it. It's by far the best mousing surface I've used, and being a plate of aluminum I expect it to wear pretty well (aside from the black coloring, which is slowly wearing off, and leaves itself on my pinky after long gaming sessions. I wish they'd just left it plain metal). It's a large mousepad, at least larger than anything I've had before, but it fits on my desk just fine.

In all honesty, I'd stay away from the iPod. It's a hassle to deal with iTunes sometimes, as in order to play a song from your iPod on your PC, you NEED to have a copy of the song somewhere on the PC and then let it know where it is. There is no god damn reason I should have to keep gigs of music on my PC: That's what the fucking iPod is for! It's especially damning when I can play it directly from the iPod with no problem.

You're not going to get an iPod in your preferred price range that isn't second- (or third-) hand. The 'other' MP3 players I hear lots about are the Creative Zen and the Zune. I have no personal experience with either, but I think I would still prefer the Zen just on reputation.

I have no need for precise mousing, so I have zero experience in that area. When my mousepads pill up, I toss them and get another for a dollar.

Take a journey into http://www.slacker.com/
A similar service to pandora with much more customization & extras that can run on sony walkman, blackberries, and have their own hardware players.
I own a Slacker G2 player and have for around 1-2 years, and its a fantastic machine.

EDIT: Didn't see your price range, that kind of rules it out.
Woot.com often time sells pretty functional mp3 players for $20-$50, you'll find a good deal there.

I've heard good things about the Sansa Clip+. 4 GB is around $40-50 new, plus it has a microSD slot so you can upgrade the memory (although reading the card on startup can take a while, especially if you have a very large microSDHC card). They should have them at Best Buy, so you can see if the interface suits your taste. I used to have a Sansa e200 series player; never noticed a problem with the shuffle like you described, and I would expect similar performance for the Clip.

Also, here is a review if you want one.

I harbor nothing but loathing for WoW. But that picture has me drooling. Shego, you've got damned fine taste. :)

And guess what just happens to be on Woot right now. A 4GB Sansa MP3 player.

Very nice! It's been ordered in Black.

That brings us down to the mouse pad!

Right now I'm debating mainly between:

http://www.amazon.com/Razer-Goliathus-Standard-Speed-Fragged/dp/B002R0DX0K/ref=pd_cp_e_1

and

http://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-6...2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1268544940&sr=8-2

but I'm thinking I may end up with the Steel Series as it's a plastic surface.

I've never understood what a mouse pad does...i've used my mouse on my desktop for the past 10 years

It protects the desk. I tried going without a mouse pad for a while, but when I realized I was wearing through the paint on my desk, I quickly got a mouse pad again. I guess your desk is made of sterner stuff than mine is.

Yeah the area where my mouse is looks nicer than the rest of my desk. Its coated with some kind of hard surfacing

Simply put, a gaming mousepad allows for much better accuracy and precise movements at "twitch" speed gaming.

Is this primarily for TF2? If so, what sens do you use (both in game and in Windows) and what's your DPI?

A precision mouspad allows high-resolution mice to more accurately register fine movements, for much the same reason you don't buy crap tires for a Ferrari. Cutting down your mousing distance allows you more range of motion in less space, which also helps reduce RSI...though I'm sure Sheg's main goal is to facilitate the headshot rather than save her wrist.

I admit sniper is my 2nd lowest played class in tf2 :p

I'd jokingly suggest one of those oppai mousepads with the silicon inserts for your wrist, but then I realized doing so would probably result in me being hunted down.

I use a trackball.

Use your thumb for all the work. It's always served me well for twitch gaming.

I suppose if I try hard enough, I could interpret it as, "Wherever there's trouble, we're there on the double."
