Should I watch Lost?

I've never seen it, and aside from the existence of a smoke monster or some shit, I know nothing about it.

Should I bother watching it? If so, when should I stop watching it to keep from getting pissed off?

I have never seen it either. We should watch the first episode, and the last episode, and see whats up

No. It is compelling, and ultimately disappointing. All this build up, then a bad ending. I thought it had some really great allegorical storytelling, and some interesting things to say, until it decided to throw all that away.

Watch the first two seasons, savor the delicious anticipation of season 3, then go watch something else.

Actually it went something like this:

"Someone handed me a script and said, 'This is a good story!' I said, 'That's not a story! That's a script!' And I THREW IT ON THE GROUND!"

I enjoyed it thoroughly. I have to disagree with the others here. I thought the ending was well done for what the show was. Any allegory earlier in the show was pretty tenuous anyway, if you ask me. I liked the last season, and I enjoyed the series finale. The only part I really didn't like comes when they reveal too much of the mystery. I mean, don't go looking for any deep meaning, because you won't really find any.

My feeling is that the writers got mad that the internet called them on exactly what they intended the island to be right out of the gate, so they got defensive and tried to turn it into something else. I have no evidence, but it's a hunch.

Fade liked it? Guess I'll pass :p

No, I'll check it out. I think, from what I've heard of it, that it suffered from it's popularity. They probably had an ending in mind, and then got 3 more seasons ordered that they had to write for.

Pretty much this. The first couple and the last seasons were great. I've been meaning to rewatch it again some time.

I watched it all, loved it, the only part that really suffers is the 3rd / Writer's Strike season. But it gets good again and I think the 4th season finale is one of my favorite episodes of Television ever.

Also mostly loved the finale as well. Great show. Maybe the best Network show of all time.

Shows I haven't watched that everyone tells me I should and have been meaning to on Netflix:

Doctor Who
Lost
Breaking Bad
Dexter
Mad Men
Arrested Development
Castle
How I Met Your Mother
Supernatural
24
Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Downton Abbey
30 Rock

To name a -few- but then I look at that list and it's pretty much:

If it helps, Dexter isn't on Netflix and is mostly bad.

I watched Dexter from start to the current season in a span of a couple weeks. I've generally enjoyed the show but it does have it's issues, but I wouldn't call it bad.

It's good, but it gets old. Definitely worth a few seasons.

Dexter started high and went downhill fast. I am not a fan of the last couple of seasons because they basically pissed all over any and all character development from the first few seasons in order to make the point that "DEXTER BAD".

Seasons 1 and 4 are great. 2 is good. The rest are various degrees of bad.

Well...I can agree to that. Here's hoping for improvement because I love the concept.

I really liked Lost at first, then stopped around mid-way Season 3....then picked it back up again until the finale. What frustrated me about the show is that they set up all sorts of mysteries, then kept building up more mysteries. The solutions and reveals were increasingly unsatisfying. Most frustrating, though, is the way they presented the mysteries, it felt like they knew exactly what they were doing...but they didn't. It became increasingly clear that they made it up as they went along and that's just not how it should've worked. If it was planned ahead like Babylon 5, it could've been great.

As for Dexter, I partly agree with Charlie: it's very hit and miss. Sometimes you'll get a fantastic season like 2 or 4. The rest is watchable, but barely. What pisses me off isn't just how less likeable Dexter becomes as the show progresses because he's crossing more lines coke addict. It's also that the cops he works with look progressively more like fucking morons. I not only assumed last season would end with him locked up (because it was a natural progression and made sense going into the last season). But no, no of course not. And now we're in the last season and I get the sinking feeling this monster will get a happy ending because he's the main character.

Lost - Watch it. It's a fun ride even though the end is kind of meh.

Dexter - Watch season 1, season 2, wiki season 3, watch season 4 and assume the show ended there.

So often the problem, especially when there's a lot of character decay around. I have a similar problem with the Mentalist. He should've been in jail at least 10 times over. Also House (though he at least faces *some* consequences, by far not enough). There's Sherlock Holmes-style slightly sociopathic and slightly autistic but hyperintelligent, and there's completely stupid risks and breaking laws/rules that are just handwaved away. The characters who're supposed to be the straight man tend to become weaker and more permissive, if not straight-out enabling, thus making the show less enjoyable for me. Segue into: romances that shouldn't ber explored. Another thing that's usually a good sign the show's been going on too long. Best example I can think of right here, right now would be Castle...The show worked much better with them playing off of one another.
