Man, it's been at least two forum incarnations since I had an art thread.

Lets start with some character concepts, shall we? I won't tell you about the character..I'm just going to toss them up here.











Here's what happens when you try to make an EXTREME costume...it turns Liefield. Then your husband decides to make it REALLY Liefield. On the upside, I like his normal attire.

I tell ya, designing unique costumes is hard. EVERYTHING HAS BEEN DONE BEFORE.

It is hard, but I have a couple tips!

1) Keep it functional and make it suit the purpose.

I had a character who was a female rogue/illusionist combo. She would use the combination to steal in order to provide for herself and her gang of street urchins. As a thief, nearly all parts of her clothing had to be form-fitting so as to not swish too out-of-control which might have caused complications (knocking shit over, etc.) In fact, when she acquired a magical cape, she tied it tightly around her arm so that it wouldn't be cumbersome. She also wore a lot of dark colours so as to not be seen in the night time or to make it easier to hide in the underground tunnels of her hometown. Finally, she wore her hair in a ponytail to keep it out of her face.

2) Design your character to fit their personality.

Even if it interferes with #1, to a point. My character wore her hair in a ponytail, but cutting it short would have worked even better. That she tried to maintain her attractive appearance despite her hard-knock childhood was a testament to her pride and self-assurance, as well as a willingness to not give up on things important to her. The result was a character design that really gave off a DnD-era femme fatale kinda feel.

3) Maybe try to work the character's past into their clothing...?

This one's kinda tricky. Maybe work some sort of conversation piece into the character's design, like a necklace she got from her mother, or an old piece of clothing she has sentimental feelings for. My thief character's shirt was made from the remnants of the childhood dress she was wearing when she was disowned by her parents, and she keeps it as a reminder of her struggle to find acceptance in the world.

Just some advice from a DnD player/ artist. Fantasy fashion design is kind of a hobby of mine.

Okay guys, this past weekend I participated in the 24 hour art marathon at a local gallery. I had a blast and managed to produce six pieces of art!

...too bad only one sold at auction for only $50.00. Half for me, half to the gallery. Oh well. Guess I'll just have to try harder next year, though it disappointing because the last time I participated I only came home with one of the 5 paintings I created.

Welp! Here's art!Excuse the crappy quality. I'll try and get better pics later.

THIS is the only one that sold. "You grab the jewels! I'll cause an abstraction!" I think it probably sold based on its pithy title.


Finished this one up about midnight. "Playing for a phantom crowd."


"Totality Fatality." I wasn't sure what I was gonig for with this. I just wanted something bizarre and kinda empty.


"God Watches." This is my favorite one. I love how the blending in the jacket came out and the tiny galaxy in the space of the hood. I thought this one would sell for sure. Ah well.


I did two more 5x7's but I forgot to take pics of them. I'll get them two you later!

A friend of mine wanted my take on his comic version of the Norse Giant, Surtr.

I quit the design. The armor is actually fairly accurate (according to my research* but the rest of the design is so BORING that I was just to unenthused to carry on.

I may take another crack at this in a few days.

Good. Now just post today's sketch, and get ready for tomorrows.

I'm really sorry about the quality of my pictures. I don't have a working scanner hooked up so I must resort to taking them using my digicam.

That said, here's yesterdays:



I was working off an old photo. I have limited time with a youngster running around my ankles so it is might sloppy.



This one came out a little better as it was drawn while he was still asleep this morning. I must have been exhausted because look at those hands! Yuck!

the outfit must have been a stitch to render. It came out well though. *i realize she is half naked. commenting on the lower half accessories* =)

Oh, don't worry about having to take pictures of your drawings. The point could be made (and I would agree with it) that a photo of a drawing is maybe more intimate and interesting than a flat digital image, because a picture of a drawing lets you see a person's sketchbook and thereby provides more of a glimpse in to the artist and all that good stuff. Also, the fact that the pages aren't flat give the drawings a neat 3-dimensional look. If you took one of these pictures in to Photoshop (or SAI, the free equivalent of Photoshop) and coloured it, you might end up with an interesting result because of all the information that the photo left in that the scanner would have cut out.

I dunno, I'm kinda arty, heh. But yeah - keep it up!
