Popsci heads up on Skynet activity:

Today, at Germany's first-ever trade fair dedicated to the wonders of doner kebab, new technology was unveiled that promises to change street-meat forever more: FFDR-V1004, the doner robot.

Doner kebab is the familiar dish, Turkish in origin but ubiquitous in Germany, of meat grilled on a vertical rotating spit and sliced off upon request. (It's kin to Greek gyros and Middle Eastern shawarma.) Until now, though, the slicing of the meat has been performed by the clumsy hands of humans.

I thought lamb was the most common meat for this type of cooking.

I saw how these were made on one of Gordon Ramsey's shows (The 'F' Word, I think). It's usually ground lamb, but also sometimes ground beef blended in. The ground meat has a number of spices - coriander, salt, pepper, a few others I can't remember - worked in and is shaped into large flattish rounded blocks, which are then placed on the skewer (the kebab) to be cooked. Yes, they're greasy and a cheap fast food meal, but they actually looked pretty good. And considering that they're served with a fair amount of veggies, they're a lot better for you than McDonalds or BK.

When I was in Germany they didn't always use ground meat, usually a lot of thin cutlets stacked on the spit with seasonings between the layers. The place I went to it was a mix of beef and mutton. Sooooo damn good with a Mezzo Mix.
