So I've decided to buy a PS3

I'm getting my family a PS3 for Christmas. I'm going with the cheap Slim version, I originally wanted the previous version to install Linux on, but searching through forums apparently the performance difference compared to a cheap PC is negligible (Specifically, I wanted to know if Blender 3D would render faster on the PS3).

anyway, list of games I want:
Ratchet & Clank
Little Big Planet
Uncharted
Resistance
Force Unleashed

What other games for PS3 do you guys recommend?
Also: I'll be hooking up the PS3 to a computer monitor with a HDMI-DVI cable. I hear from multiple sources that it's possible, but does it come out looking right? Anyone with experience regarding that?

I envy you. I won't buy one until I have an HDTV and that looks to be some ways away.

An HDTV would be nice but I'm a long way of being able to afford both. Perhaps that will be next year's christmas project.

Running your ps3 through a hdmi - dvi adapter should look fine. Get a good BT headset, I'm using the ps3 one that I got for a gift, works like a charm.

Get Call of Duty 2: Modern Warfare and Assassin's Creed 2.

I have only used it on my HDTV so I can't help you there... Thats a good list of games, I own all but Ratchet and Clank. You should get the first Resistance before getting 2 though. Just for gameplay continuities sake. I've really enjoyed the new Prince of Persia and I'm jonesing to guy Little Big Planet.

Hopefully I'll receive little big planet for xmas. I'm dying to play it but afraid to purchase it this close to the holiday.

What's the native resolution of your monitor? I tried connecting a ps3 to my 1920x1080 monitor, and it looked horrible. The ps3 doesn't do any scaling on its end, so the output will always be the resolution of the game (usually 720p)

I don't recommend it, unless your monitor does good scaling on its own

I got the system and R&C, hooked it up to an old CRT television with the RCA cables to test it out, even on low-definition it looks beautiful. But you can definitely see that it's intended for a much larger screen. None of my stores in town had a DVI-HDMI adaptor at a reasonable price (Best Buy wanted 50 bucks for the same cord that's 10 on newegg... yeah right) so I'm just waiting for that to arrive before I can see it on the LCD.

I have to reiterate the question posed earlier. What resolution does your monitor run at?

As was stated, the PS3 doesn't scale and in some cases, won't even work. For example, I have a DVI compliant monitor and the DVI/HDMI cable and it doesn't work on my 1280X1024 monitor.

I'd also recommend inFamous as well and Arkham Asylum. Playing as the joker is a unique experience in the challenge rooms.

I wouldn't suggest either Resistance 1 or 2. Well at least 2 which I've played and partially beaten. It was an overall meh experience to the whole scope of the game.

I would also recommend the God of War collection if you haven't considered it either.

Killzone 2 had a cool storyline the visuals are great but the multiplayer rather sucks.

Rachet and Clank is an awesome game with a fun yet albeit predictable story. If you want any spoilers feel free to send me an im. The time solving puzzles with Clank were the most unique aspect.

If you go for force unleashed I would recommnd the goty edition or the 'sith edition'.

The extra maps are fun although hoth and the temple level were among the more unique ones.

Uncharted is a must have for any ps3 system. period. its a fun romp that feels sometimes like your playing a hollywood summer movie. The final boss fight can get a tad annoying. You will come to loathe mercs with laser pointed scopes.

Itching to get Uncharted 2 and Assasins Creed 2 yet. Will have to wait till after Christmas.

The inFamous game despite its nice textured very fine detailed scenery was the storyline and superpowers. One of the more humorous past times in the game was to shock a civilian then resuscitate then zap and re rinse.

A game to keep on your radar is ModNation Racer which I'm particularly looking forward too. You get to design your own player and cart and create and share your own tracks. Should kick Mario Kart's ass.

My monitor is 1680x1050. Even if it doesn't work, I'm happy to run on the old TV until I can get an HDTV.
