So the Joinable User Groups thing? Didn't work.

Remember when I tried to set up the Forum Games thing so that you only saw it in the What's New if you specifically joined that group? Well, that didn't work out so well.

The reason is because I tried to set it up so that new users would see the forum games sub but those who opted out would not. But since it was joinable, the only way to do this was through forum promotion. And it promotes everyone who meets the criteria, which means that even if you didn't want to join the group it would join it for you. Additionally, if I set it up so that you moved OUT of the group on certain criteria it would remove even those who WANTED to join the group.

So that didn't work.

Today I added something new. It doesn't rely on user groups, doesn't move people...none of that.

Under your Permissions is now a button called "What's New". There you can choose which sub boards do not show up under your What's New. Don't want to see Forum Games any more? Check the box and they are gone. Want to see Forum Games? You don't have to do anything.

There is no "Forum Games" box.

Thread Games. Sorry.

That doesn't seem to exist either.

Nope

But I appreciate this.

It probably doesn't exist for you because you had chosen not to join the group. Let me check and see.

Yeah, that was the issue.

Wow, getting it's own forum just killed those games.

Try it now.

Well, nobody could see them. Most people browse General and that's about it.

Can I be very honest? "Post your gifs", "Post your pictures", "post your videos", "post your songs", "NSFL gifs", and so on, are all pretty much just "postwhoring" threads too, and the replacements of the forum games. I don't really see much of a difference between "say something funny about the previous poster" and "post a random picture from GasBandit's Hoard"; perhaps the first is actually more creative than the second. So, y'know....

I completely disagree.

There's a vast gulf between someone posting a rad video and someone posting a single fucking word.

I've always felt the same way especially the image and song threads. Just page after page of images and then when we start talking about them someone will say something like can we get back to the images... oook.

True enough, but a lot of the flack was directed, for example, at the "Say something about the previous poster" threads - which really weren't "just post a word". I've had quite a few very funny conversations in there; sometimes it was witty banter, sometimes just mocking each other, sometimes actual, intelligent conversation.
In the same vein, some posts in the video/gif/whatever threads are "rad videos", others are just reposts of the latest 9Gag.... content value zero. I don't deny some of the thread games (devolve into/are meant as) "post a word and boost your post count". I'm just saying that a lot of the posts i nthe gif/video/... threads are just as good/bad. That some people insist on knocking one and considering the other to be great entertainment value and deep and intelligent is, to me, a bit hypocritical.

The one-word and say-something threads have a circularity to them that is too masturbatory for my preferences. The picture threads don't put me off like that, and so I do find them more entertaining for that reason alone.

I think what Bubble is trying to say is that he's obsessed with one and can't see the other at work, so he hates the other.

But either way, if there's a way to nix some subgroups so I don't have to see what I don't like--awesome. Everyone wins, and nobody has to whine about threads they don't like anymore. It's a beautiful thing.

Posting funny pictures and awesome videos is sharing media.

Posting about previous poster and its ilk is sharing dead monkey roadkill.

What is really circular is the disagree crap. It's just stupid and yes I know this will get a bunch of disgrees. However, I am not really affected by disagrees so it doesn't matter. I think the disagree should be removed it seems to be abused a lot. But even when it is used, i guess, correctly it still kind of meaningless.

Hmmm...No. Let me try again.

Word Games:
AT WORST -> masturbatory, self-referential, nonsensical, useless post whoring.
AT BEST -> creative, interesting, social, you learn things about one another etc.
Gif threads
AT WORST -> reposting over and over of the same tired old gifs and videos, nonsensical, useless post whoring.
AT BEST -> creative, interesting, showing off of art, getting people to know new artists etc.

I'm not saying I'm obsessed with one and/or hate the other - for the record, I like both. Word games probably more because I can, indeed, see them at work. I'm well aware that's a personal preference, and I'm not judging anyone for liking one or the other better or worse.
Why the one is "general" and perfeclty fine and the other is, at least by some, considered "garbage" and "not worth the bytes" is beyond me, though, and I'm a bit allergic to people trying to push one out of HF while the other one's allowed to occupy half the front page of General and that's just fine and dandy - that's purely personal preference too. I, for one, don't come to HF to see funny gifs or pictures, there's plenty of 9Gag/Cheezburger/gifbin/4Chan sites to see those in large quantities. I see them on Facebook. I see them on Twitter. I do'nt mind seeing them here - they can be funny. Some pictures/gifs/... here are original art, or come from places I wouldn't know to look, so great. But, as said before...reposting the 9gag-of-the-day is just as unoriginal as posting "^^ has an owl for an avatar".

The point is, I don't give a fuck how many Say Something... threads there are if I don't have to see them.

I am absolutely, perfectly in agreement with that sentiment. I feel the same way about threads about American sports :p (except beach volleyball. Obviously I need to see all threads about beach volleyball.)

Which is in the Sports sub-forum. So the Say Something threads can be in their sub-forum.

The media threads are a general thing, which is why they're in General, while the games are more of a niche thing. You can send a link to the Funny Pictures thread to someone who's never been here or has no interest in this place and they'll be entertained. Send a Say Something thread to someone outside this clique and they won't give a shit.

...I am well aware of that. Please, do show me where I said the forum games should all be in General? I don't. I don't think so. I'm perfectly fine with them being in a subforum. Any chance of just...stopping? 'cause right now, to me, you're coming off as just trying to get in the last word in a discussion where I don't even *have* the opposite viewpoint. Which is kind of silly.

It sounds like you want the Funny Pictures, Awesome Videos, etc. in the Thread Games subforum.

There... is a media subforum. I do hope the picture/video threads don't get sent there.
