Seriously??? a government entity is banning certain drink (and maybe food later). I can partly understand why (health reasons) but I believe that intrude on people's right to drink stuff that can purchase LEGALLY within the U.S.

I need to make a vehicle that I can use to smuggle Coke (a cola) to school kids all across Marin County. Hey little Jimmy the first tastes free.

Or make an insulated flask so you can sneak some Dr. Pepper into high school sporting events.

It looks like it's only banning sugary drinks in vending machines on city property, so I don't see a problem with it.

Sugary-drink ban starts to affect S.F. site

But that they are banning ANYTHING that is legal in all 50 states, pisses me off.

It is the same problem I have with the right wingers here. They want to protect me from their temptations.

OK, it says city property. I thought it was an outright ban with in the city.

Still, let the employees decide.

They aren't keeping you from anything though. They're just saying you can't sell sugary drinks on city property. Go around the corner and buy it from the gas station if it's that important.

*You edited your post... Nevermind.

My god Chibi, way to make a mountain out of a molehill. The city banned sodas in VENDING MACHINES (not stores) on CITY PROPERTY (not the whole city). Did you even read the article? Why is this a real problem? No one's rights are being infringed, you can still get soda at a store and drink it to your heart's content.

Yea. It starts vending machine now.... people accepts it. It just sets bad precedent that city can say what is good and bad. What is to say that they will expand to non vending machine? etc etc?

What's next? Plastic bags?

None of that explains why you decided to frame this story as though the whole city banned all soda everywhere.

The soda ban applies to vending machines on city owned property. The ariticle states that the ban is on vending machines within city limits which is technically correct but implies something different.

Oh come on, that's ol' faulty scare tactic escalation logic and you know it.

I wasn't actually being sarcastic. Halifax has banned all bottled and cooler water from it's buildings.

So, why are we complaining about this?

So, why are we complaining about this?
Because if we don't get angry and shout from the windows about things of no consequence we will be forced to deal with actual issues that are incredibly complex and impact us greatly on many levels.

Thus; tastes great or less filling?

I fully support them not selling soft drinks in schools. They should do the same with all vending machines. If the fat fucks want their sugar addiction to continue, they can happily waddle to whatever the fuck they sell these drinks if they really want that drink. I occassional indulge but still... water is a PERFECTLY FINE SUBSTITUTE.

It does seem a bit counterproductive for schools to have all these "Nutrition Rules" posters around and still keep soda machines in there. 'Course, a local bottling company was a sponsor for my school, so we didn't have much choice.

Water is the best thing to drink.

I did not realize that this had happened. I'm not sure if I like it, but it's definitely interesting to me, especially since the commodification of water is something that I find deeply concerning.

I don't even drink soda and I am pissed off about this. It should not be up to the government to decide what we can and cannot drink. Especially if it is a LEGAL product.

It seems less "we've decided you can't drink this" and more "you can still drink this, but we're not going to provide it for you"

Um, it's entirely within the city government's rights to determine what can and can't be sold on city property.

They should do the same with Cigs. This stuff isn't good for you. In Canada you cannot buy cigs anywhere but in places who have licenses to do it and can check your ID card.

The concept to even defend these machines who sell this stuff is pretty asinine in my eyes. Drop your addictions or take the long walk to go get them to get your fix.

I'm not sure about the rest of the US, but California has already banned cig vending machines. Pretty much for the same reasons you mentioned. I don't remember anyone really kicking up sand about that when it happened a few years ago.

I have seen a cigarette vending machine in Canada, but it was in a bar, where presumably the patrons would all be of age anyhow.

Which is my unique way of saying "I have nothing useful to add."

I don't think I've seen a cigarette vending machine in years. This doesn't seem too problematic to me. If they made soda illegal, different story. But it just looks like they've just decided to not shove it down our throats as much.

Yeah, cig vending machines are illegal in states that card for Tobacco because they can't check if your legal. I've seen them re-purposed into condom/candy machines though.

Here, they're only found in bars and you need the waiter to unlock it for you or something. (Cig vending machines)
