Solution to Police Brutality: Make Recording Police Illegal

Yes, really

Basically a few states are abusing wiretapping laws to make it illegal to record cops abusing their authority.

That's odd, I thought Big Brother liked cameras. I predict this will not go far since I can't see the Supreme Court upholding these laws. Sheesh, what bullshit.

Beyond the obvious, this means it is now illegal to have CCTV cameras running when an on-duty cop walks into your store to buy coffee, visits a hospital to drop off a victim, etc. I predict this will Streisand up in their faces (the legislatures' faces, not the cops'). At some point, the police are going to requisition some video to corroborate their side of a story and the camera owner is going to be all, "Oh no, I'm sorry. I deleted that footage since it is illegal to record you guys."

That, or the public will get outraged enough at the unfairness of it all (They get to record us with their dash cams and cameras, but we don't get to record them?) and demand the legislature do something about it.

I thought that there were already laws on the books in certain places that prevented it. I personally don't think that they should be prevented from being video taped, especially if its not an invasion of privacy.

There is however the other side of the coin which states cops should be video taped in everything they do, and it makes me curious as to how that falls with undercover work.

Also I would be curious as to how the resident police officers feel about the amount they are record (would they prefer more/less/same).

That's horseshit. As long as the recorders are not interfering in what's happening, record away. Hell, I have a dash cam on my cruiser, everything I do is recorded.

I'm afraid it's time for an Ironic Echo from when the Patriot Act passed: If the Police aren't doing anything illegal, then they have nothing to fear from being monitored.

This is what I am thinking. Many stores have cameras in their shop, so does this mean if the law is passed that a person can be arrested? will a sign stating "You are being monitored when entering this store" be good enough?

This is bullshit. Police should have a fucking obligation to allow people to record them. The power to walk around with a gun, cuffs, and the authority to use them shouldn't be governed exclusively by the honor system.
