I was digging through some old Halforums folders and found the very beginning of a story I'd started for some story-writing contest. I immediately hit writer's block after a few paragraphs, but I was basically going to cameo all the main posters with their own personalities and roles and such. I even came up with a system for how this "Forum" town worked, and came up with fictional "real-life" functions of threads, posts, etc. Shego was going to be an assassin, you know, all that good crap.
Anyway, it never got off the ground and I don't have any motivation to continue like I might have then, but I figured I'd post it because fuck it why not.
“It’s dark. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.”
“*snort* Huhu-what?” My head snapped up at the sudden noise. I’d apparently begun to doze off. “What’d you say?” I cast my gaze sidelong at my colleague, my chin perched atop the barrel of my rifle.
Dave chuckled. “Nothin’ man. Just keep your eyes open. And get your head off your gun,” he said, shifting his weight in the dirt. “Last thing we need is a rookie blowin’ his head off his first week in.”
I did as the man instructed, raising my body from its slumped position, grasping the barrel of the gun in one hand and pivoting it towards the sky. The only thing in danger of an accidental firing now was the moon. “Yeah… First week..” I mumbled to myself. I drifted my eyes lazily over the vast barren expanse ahead of us. I wondered what exactly we were keeping watch for. I’d considered asking Dave once before, but I honestly don’t think he knew either. We were just Mods out keeping our Forum safe. Safe from grues.
Yeah right.
“C’mon man. Shift’s up. Let’s head on back in.” Dave’s voice permeated my thoughts and effectively brought them to a halt.
I think I actually scrapped this beginning and started a new one, because I have an alternate file. But holy shit is the other file badly written. I think that's why I quit- I couldn't get the other beginning to go the way I wanted.
