STALKER is hard.

Seriously. I just got the first stalker day yesterday and played it quite a bit today and this game hates you. Hates your computer, your character, your stupid face.

Honestly this is one of the most difficult games i've played in a long time. I mean I know you're not supposed to play it like halo, its not a run and gun. But damn, you take the wrong step and boom, dead. take a little too long checking your inventory, dead. I saved my game fully alive, and next time i loaded it, i was dead. The game hates me.

Im making progress, and I do enjoy it... kinda. Anyone play this? what do you think and any tips?

Die less.

The game gets easier after you find Strelok's stash (there's a pretty neat rapid-fire AK-74 stored there that'll last you until you get better weapons), and you should have the opportunity to get better armor before long.

The beginning parts of the game though, you're pretty much made of glass. The game remains pretty difficult all throughout, but it's the very beginning and very end of the game that's the hardest.

This pattern is repeated in Clear Sky, although it gets even worse there where the "tutorial" level sets you up against a bunch of guys while you have crappy armor and the worst shotgun in the game (plus it's glitchy, so it goes on for a bit after you should be finished), and the last levels have you up against like 20 or so guys at once and a helicopter with little chance of getting more healing items.

Stalker does have those hideously hard timed areas, where you need to rush through an area, under fire from dozens of guys, before the next anomaly storm kills you. Those suck, especially the last one where your also being shot at by helicopters.

STALKER is not a game for beginners. Fuck, it's not even a game for the advanced player.

There's a bit of armor you can collect in the starting area in the attic of one of the houses that requires a bit of creative rooftop jumping to get to. It makes starting the game a little bit easier.

Too bad armor is basically worthless near the end of the game.
Having an exoskeleton helps loads near the end of the game, even if it's impossible to run in one. There's also a whole bunch of them just lying around in the final areas.

Played and loved the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R, I even wrote a mini-review after I finished it.

The difficulty you're talking about, is the biggest draw that the game had for me to be honest, and the last few areas of the game are BRUTALLY fantastic. It really makes you "think" like a real human would in those situations and against those odds.

Yahtzee made a video about the Sequel that holds pretty true to the original.

I think I might pick up a copy.
I would. I mean honestly it is fun and quite different. But the start is fucking hard. I mean... fuck.

But thanks for the advice guys, I did grab the armor and that helped and now I got a decent gun which makes all the difference.

Still saving every 10 minutes though just in case.

I bought the game for cheap, and played it for a while before moving on to something else.

I did have a fun time picking off the military towards the beginning in order to get their weapons, though.

That's a shame, it drew me in like very few games other than Fallout have done in recent years.
I think the main reason I stopped playing was that I needed to start focusing on schoolwork, and I could tell that the game would only suck countless hours out of my life as I failed over and over again to accomplish my objectives.

I'm not going to be picking up any STALKER stuff until the sequel comes out, at the very least. Both STALKER and Clear Sky are buggy as hell.

When I got owned the first time in this game. I took a step back... checked the setting... optimized, fine tuned my key settings and started all over and took the game for real. Sure, I died a few times here and there but god damn I deserved it.

Great game... wished it wasn't so glitchy at times.

Yeah, thats my biggest gripe with it right now. I still dont know why sometimes I will load a saved game and be dead. pisses me off.

Best is the baddies that can stick their guns through a wall and kill me. Awesome.

Well fuck... my brother just gifted me a copy of STALKER over Steam. Hey Shego... you have any links lying around for the patches/mods I'm going to want to get the game working right? :D

Hey, I'm the STALKER fanatic here.

That said, play the game unmodded the first time through, it really is strong enough to stand on its own.

Stalker Complete 2009 is good for repeat playthroughs and an improved experience (although there are a few changes that it makes that I don't like, it is mostly an improvement). Oblivion Lost gives the game more of a standard FPS feel instead of what the game was going for originally, so I'm not really a fan.

LURK is good if you want to be hardcore and it looks to be the best modification yet, but some of the kinks are still being worked out.

Well I just beat it and... eh, it was pretty good. I guess I was expecting something a little more for the ending stuff. (and yes, i did get the 'true' ending) I mean it was hard as fuck, but just didn't seam to go with the rest of the game.

Ok, I can't seem to find any concrete instructions on how to mod the Steam version... anyone able to point me in the right direction?

Doesn't matter. I uninstalled it... and the game is so fucking buggy, it actually corrupted all my steam files on the way out, meaning I had to re-install Steam and all it's games. FUCK Stalker.

yeah, that um.... doesn't sound like something it could do.

... are you guys just unable to detect sarcasm or something? I mean really :D

My files did get corrupted somehow though... and it did happen RIGHT after I tried to download the L4D2 Demo, which I did do right after uninstalling STALKER.
