Star Wars with my nephew

My nephew just turned 6 this last weekend. It was an Iron Man theme and a lot of fun. Anyhow, as I was helping him unpack and assemble his awesome toys (read: play with all of them!!!) I heard him humming a tune. It was the SW Main Theme. I asked him what he was humming. He said it was the "SW song." I was over-joyed! He then asked if we could watch SW. His folks said that he hasn't seen it yet, but must have been heard about it at school. So, this Memorial Day weekend, we're going to have a SW marathon!! I can't wait.

BTW, we're only watching the real OT. No prequels or any of that trash. If he really digs them, I shall pass on some of my toys/collectibles. :tears:

Six is a good age to watch it. I saw it at 6, and it was the coolest thing I ever saw.

I've waited a little longer with my cousins because they're over-sensitive to scary bits in movies due to being sheltered. They're about to turn 8, so maybe the time is coming.

He saw the first Iron Man and didn't get freaked out. I don't know if the aliens and such would be too scary though. I'll definitely switch it off if he gets too freaked out.
I saw ESB when I was 5 or 6. I don't remember being scared by it.

My sister is not sheltered from films (as she has grown up having my parents wach CSI while she fell asleep since she was a toddler), but still got nightmares about the Sand People wich made us have to stop watching the films... Wich she was loving. She was 6, now she's 7, we'll try again soon (she now really likes Stardust, for example, wich has a fair amount of elements as scary as sand people)

See, you can never tell what's going to scare a kid. When I was little, the Jawas and the trash compacter scene were what scared me, though I still sat through the movie and wasn't traumatized. It's different for every kid. The song "Blessed" scared the hell out of one of my cousins--no idea why.

We had a seven-year-old nephew of mine watch Fellowship of the Ring with us. He was fine with it until the point where Bilbo's face transformed when he was grabbing for the ring. Interesting that the Nazgul, the armies of Sauron, etc. didn't scare him much.

I was scared of anything animatronic as a kid. I think it's from when I saw Return to Oz, but maybe it was before that.

Also, ask him which one he liked best of the three movies. It's always interesting to see a little kid's perspective on these things.

My guess is he'll like return of the Jedi best. It's more kid-oriented, really, and the happy ending will excite him after Empire Strikes Back.

You know what? better yet, see if he wants to write reviews for the movies.

Lol, that would be awesome.

I'd actually like to see what the kid would say seeing all 6 of the movies, seeing as that's the audience the new movies are supposedly geared for and see if he hates them just as much as adults do.

Funny, six is when I saw the first one...in 77. I barely remember being there/seeing it though. What I remember more is seeing Empire. Man, that was awesome. The lobby of the theater was so packed you could barely walk through it. We played "Hoth" in the winter time for the next few years after that.

When I was 6 I got freaked out by the original Nosferatu.

I was 7 when Star Wars hit. I still kick myself, to this day, for watching the King Kong remake before I saw Star Wars...

So I did not end up seeing SW in a packed house in the first few months of its release. Thankfully back then hit movies stayed in theaters for months at a time. Raiders of the Lost Ark stayed first run for over a year.

Really? People are worried about 6 year olds being scared by Star Wars? I had watched Star Wars I don't even know how many times by 6. My parents had made me watch it so many times, and I remember having absolutely no clue what the plot was at all and just loving the light sabres, until I rewatched it when I was like 10 and finally could appreciate it.

What scared the CRAP out of me when I was little was Alien. I remember being 4 years old and hiding as best as I could on a ride at Universal Studios in Florida because there was a Xenomorph drooling on people from up in the rafters.

Aww you should watch the prequels. Kids love the prequels just as much. Oh welcome to living hell. EVERYTHING he talks about will now be about Star Wars.

My nephew NEVER shuts up about friggin Star Wars and who kills who and who fights who and saves who. He constantly sings the "Death Star approach" song.

I don't have the prequels on DVD. I supposed I should have him watch those too. I'm still going to start with Episode IV.

I'll see if I can do that. It probably won't be as cute as that one little girl saying, "Shiny guy always worries."

That's okay. I was that kid after I saw them until I turned 25-26. I was obsessed. My family still gets me SW junk for Christmas, and I still get excited.

some of the new SW toys are pretty awesome. I love to get me some lego stuff, but they are pretty pricey :(

Yeah, all the new Lego stuff is really cool. I have an older Slave I Lego on my desk at home. Lego Boba Fett is the coolest.

Never start with the prequels.

Yeah, cause it makes the revelation in ESB moot (from the audience perspective). I think I'll just show him the OT and let him find the prequels on his own.

The prequel doesn't exist.... It doesn't!!!! :)

I'm still that kid and I turn 30 in a month and a half.
