Summer plans?

I'm leaving for London in 2.5 weeks! :D I can't wait to see my old friends again. Jake and I are also going to rock climb (not for real, on the foamy indoor ones...). That's gonna be really fun. I remember when we used to do it more often, I'd get pleasantly sore... a really good sore.

Incidentally (shameless plug, shameless plug), if anyone likes live music and is around any of these areas, my brother is touring:

You could be the creepy person who approaches him after the show and says, "I know your sister from the internet."

Going to Disneyland at the end of June. Two full days in both parks. Staying at the hotel shaped like a castle just a block and a half away from the entrance.

Working. :(

Though weather pending, I'll try going out for long bike rides as much as I can. I'd also like to go here at some point, as I did it once with the University of Maine at Presque Isle's outdoor club:

Everyone who is traveling, do me a favor and take photos of you touching famous landmarks. I have a flickr group that needs more entries.

If you don't have a flickr account, how can you turn down 1TB for free?

Grayton Beach in Florida, around the 4th of July, for my wife's side of the family's pseudo-reunion. They rent a big-ass beach house, and we get to visitate.

I'll be surrounded by rich snobbery, but it's a good beach, and maybe I'll get some fishing in! FINALLY!

Bitch please... I lived in Provence. Folks here don't know what great wine is.

And I don't know about the scotch thing, either. It's mostly beach bars down there, with some crappy craft beer. Still, I guess I'll just have to sample it all... *grins*

Vacation is once again a GO. Question is where and how long. NYC is no longer on the table. I'm thinking somewhere I haven't been before, and that means Midwest. Never been to Michigan or Wisconsin, even in passing... yet.

Well, if you do hit michigan, consider carving out some time for Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village.

We also have 4+ forum members close-ish to Ann Arbor, so if you do set time aside to visit with us yahoos, I imagine you'd get a number of us to carve out time to visit with you.

I'm getting greedy. A Vermeer exhibit's gonna be in Atlanta this summer. I reeeally wanna go but I don't know if we'll be able to afford 2 trips. But it's going to ITALY after that..... I might have to start saving pennies.

The Deli! That's my old stompin' ground! Saw tons of bands there when I was an undergrad. That's pretty cool! I'll see if I can make it.

Getting married in August, then heading to St. Croix for a couple weeks for the honeymoon and getting some scuba diving in.

Couple of weddings to attend, maybe a couple of days at my parents' place on the coast, and my brother from South Africa is visiting for 3 days. Other than that, work, work, and occasionally, work. New car this year and the intent to go visit my brother in Africa next year mean no budget for a holiday this year.
Also, some home improvement - kitchen needs new floors.

I'm doing it! I've decided!

I was flip-flopping so much, but I've decided. I'm taking a road trip with a coworker to see the Vermeer exhibit in Atlanta. She's one of my favorite people at work--really deadpan and funny, we're into a lot of the same stuff, and she's dying for a girl's vacation (she has a family--all boys). So it's definitely a risk, because we have never traveled together, but she's so mellow and fun to be around that I'm going for it. I haven't gone on a road trip with a girl besides my sister in a loooooong time.

I really have to get some major headway in the project at work. The wife and I would love to go camping in Colorado (like we've done nearly the last few summers), but I don't think it will happen.

Also, I will try to make time to do some woodworking - furniture projects.

According to recent studies, neither do so-called wine experts. There's apparently a great deal of confirmation bias in wine. Experts subjected to blind tests could not tell the difference between a $4 bottle of table wine and a classic. They also could not tell the difference between a red wine and a white carefully dyed red.

I've heard stuff like that too! You really can get some wonderful wines for 7-10$ a bottle. There are some more expensive ones I love, but ain't nothing wrong with a Mirassou Pinot Noir either.

Even Alton Brown, snob that he typically is, says if you pay more than $10, you're paying for the label.

That really surprises me. I believe that brands are bullshit, but for the most part I've always found white wine to be a lot sweeter than red.

Been unemployed for a while, so can't be spending money on luxury vacations at the moment. Thanks to my hoarder nature, I've been selling old collectible stuff that people are very willing to buy.

I could be wrong, but I thought the only major difference b/t red and white wine was that white uses skinless grapes. So, detecting the taste difference should be difficult. Although, I haven't had enough wine to confirm this. I usually get nothing more than 15 bucks a bottle, and I never order wine at a restaurant.

I'm working. Next vacation day after today isn't until October. :(

#42

Bubble181

Difference between red and white wine depends on the type - white wine can be made from skinless red grapes, or from actually white ones.
Those made with different grapes tend to taste mostly the same; those made without skin tend to contain less acids and are slightly softer/rounder to drink.

That said, most of the taste difference most people taste, comes from the different temperatuer. A red wine and a white wine both drunk at 18°C taste fairly similar, withm ost ofthe remaining taste difference being the aging - red wines tend to be kept on the barrel for a longer period of time.

And eh, the really cheap wines tend to be crappy ($3 and down) though there are some reasonable ones. Those in the average price range vary wildly, and it bears tasting and trying before buying lots of them or serving to visitors. Medium-high priced wines tend to be good. Very high priced wines tend to be either very good, or really mediocre but with a big name.

I live in Glendale, my good man. My wife may be the only hurdle, as she's not the trusting soul that I am, but maybe we can have you over for dinner sometime. If nothing else when we have a large group of people over we might be able to get you in at that point. I don't think "He's an internet friend" means much to her.

Well... our move to the People's Republic of Walkerstan has fallen through, and now we're not even really sure that we'll be able to move out of the shit hole apartment we live in now and into a decent apartment. Hopefully I'll be spending at least most of the summer getting used to a new job.

But, we're in a convenient location. That helps.

I'm sorry to hear that, though I'm also not surprised. PRoW is seeing more jobs leaving than coming in. Only way it really could be bad would be if HD were to vacate for another state.

I'm back! People are so quiet and polite on the tube... it's too much fun to make them just a little uncomfortable. So when a very understanding and nice middle-aged guy kept brushing up against me on a very crowded train, I started singing "Every Time We Touch."

And yes, I did the Dick Van Dyke accent. So many wonderful times. ^_^ I will miss pubs.
