Sweet 16

LordRendar

LordRendar

So, I met this awsome girl a couple of weeks ago during an Indi rock concert.
Sweet as hell,Funny and Intelligent. After a couple of drinks one thing led to another,
and we woke up the next morning at my place where I found out she just turned 16 (im 24).
After initial Shock,a little talk,we continued seeing each other and we are now in a relationship.
Her parents know, and seem to like me,but I dont know how to break it to my friends.

I started a theoretical discussion on older guys having a quite younger girlfriends with my friends, but got mostly negativ feedback. But I really don't want to hide the relationship any longer.

What to do?

oh god. I can see this thread is going to go downhill quick.

I dont know what to tell you man, but it sounds like your relationship is going to be a problem.

Yeah,it will be hard on us.At least i got the support of the parents.

I'm sorry, but you need to end the relationship. She's too young, and that means there are issues about maturity and informed decisions. I understand that things started on the level as far as you knew, and I'm sure you like this girl. Still, it's a problem.

In the meantime, I'll stick around and watch the impending train wreck of a thread you started.

First off, what country're you from?

Need to know whether this is even legal before we comment on anything else.

Also, in before trainwreck. At least you have a name that takes a great deal of creativity to misspell as 'Iaculus'... though LordRavage may not be so lucky.

Alright. So technically, it's not illegal. However, there's still an eight year age difference. It'll only end poorly. Get out now.

I don't even look at it in terms of an 8-year difference.

She is literally 2/3rds your age.

I dunno, seems kinda doomed from the outset. My question is how do you pick up a girl and NOT know that she's 16?

Divide your current age by half. Then, add seven years. That is the minimum age of people you should be dating.

Really there is no good way to deal with it. If you tell them, they'll react however they react and may or may not alienate you from their group. If you value your friendship with them more than your relationship with her, then you might want to consider breaking up with her.

#25

well, if the age of consent is 16 there i don't see anything wrong with it.

i mean, it makes you seem creepy and there is basically 0 chance it will end well, but it's ethical i guess.

Plus, i never got that line of thought, it's like saying that you'll eventually die, so why not just end your life already.

speaking in broad generalisations:

if a 16 year old is dating a 24 year old, then the 24 year old is approximately 150% as experienced as the 16 year old.

if a 30 year old is dating a 38 year old, while there is still a 8 year difference, the 38 year old is only 125% as experienced as the 30 year old.

a relationship where 1 party has 150% as much life experience as the other will most likely be creepy and not end well.

Well, what age were they when they began their relationship? There's a difference between a relationship between a 15 year old and a 22 year old, and a relationship between a 23 year old and a 30 year old.

Gurpel

"broad generalisations"

a 24 year old is 150% as old as a 16 year old. ERGO it is relatively likely that they will have 150% the experience, or at least a relative headstart on the 16 yr old in terms of maturity/decision making.

But when did they meet? It's not that an 8 year difference is too much, it's that it's too much when one of the people is 16. Just think of the huge changes you, or anyone else, goes through between the ages of 16 and 24. I'm 24 myself, and I couldn't imagine dating a 16 year old. The differences, especially maturity wise, would just be way too much to sustain a relationship - leaving aside the legal and ethical problems.

None of us here can tell you how to live your life, LordRendar. If it's not illegal, it's your decision, obviously. But ask yourself - why are you so afraid to introduce her to your friends? My guess would be because you think the relationship is morally (even if it's not legally) wrong, and you think your friends will think the same thing.

Really, in general, if you have problems introducting a significant other to your friends, that's a big flashing warning sign that something is seriously wrong with the relationship.

I disagree with this. If I had a homosexual relationship I would have a hard time introducing them to some of my friends.

However I do see your point and how it pertains to this situation. It seems like on some level he is questioning the relationship based on his own moral issues. This is something else he really has to think about.

Perhaps she seems mature now, just because the relationship is still new and they haven't had a moment where she does something immature. Maybe she is mature though, and everything will be alright.

I suppose I would say introduce her to your friends and don't bring up her age unless directly asked. If they call you out on it, and ask why you're hanging out with someone who is obviously too young for you, then maybe they see something you don't. If they don't mention it at all, then maybe she really is as mature as you think.

I don't care about the legality of it all, or that you like her and she likes you and her parents don't mind.

This relationship is not going to last because she's an immature 16-year old girl who is far from ending her development as an adolescent, let alone as a human being. Plus, you know, it's really fucking gross and you should date people your own age.

What the fuck do you have in common with a 16 year old?

Ok, good point. I'm not saying EVERY situation where you have a hard time introducting a significant other to your friends means that there is a problem with the relationship. In GENERAL, though, you have to ask yourself: why do I have a problem telling my friends about this? And in LordRender's case, I think it's because he does have moral problems with the relationship - as well he should.

Thank You.That is pretty good advice.
You're welcome.
