Syndicate

So...I'm not gonna lie, I used to flipping love the original Syndicate. You had a 4-man squad in high-octane action RTS.

And when I first started watching the trailer for this, I was like, "Really? A first-person shooter? THAT'S how you're gonna do this?"

But then...all those badass things you can do in the game? Yeah, I'm officially stoked for this, now.

I never played syndicate, and I don't like shooters. I still want this.

I never played Syndicate either (my older brother loved it, though). But this game looks pretty neat. I think the angry fanboys can appreciate it if they use the "I, Robot" technique: consider it a stand alone game that just HAPPENS to be called "Syndicate"

While this game IS a very big detour from the playing style of the original Syndicate, I don't feel it's necessarily a bad thing. Failing all else, it might rekindle interest in the original property, and we might see a more modern version of that.

These things come in phases. For now, we're still riding the FPS phase, which came after the RTS phase, etc etc. I should like to see where this goes, and how it pans out.

As an addendum to that, I was on the fence on this new X-Com coming out... I may revisit my opinion, for the reasons stated above.

It's called "Cartel". I mentioned this in the Video Games Miscellany thread.

I have to wonder if the games end up being similar enough to prompt legal action though...

Small aside: if you're itching for a semi real time cyberpunk game in the mean time, I heavily recommend Frozen Synapse. You can get it on the Indie Bundle for cheap.

...like I said, I don't mind the fact that they're turning Syndicate into a shooter but a trailer showing footage of the ORIGINAL GAME and even calling it "critically acclaimed" followed by footage of the new one just feels dickish. Like they're saying "Hey, remember THIS cool game? Wasn't it great? Well guess what? We're making a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ONE!"

Gotta say, I'm digging some of this stuff. The visual style looks neat (the AR-esque menus on stuff are a nice touch) and the mechanics look like fun. Not as excited about this as I was about DX:HR but this could be a winner.

Speaking of HR, I guess that game spoiled me a bit: once I saw that guy casually gun down those employees my first thought was "What, no pacifist run? ...oh wait, this is Syndicate. You're SUPPOSED to be an amoral murdering bastard. DUH."
