Tales of Monkey Island

Com-PLETELY out of left field... it's the Tales of Monkey Island, a 5-episodic series from Telltale Games. I'm bloody excited, this looks good.

http://www.telltalegames.com/monkeyisland

I forsee quite a bit of potential in this one, seeing as how it's from Telltale. I've been playing S&M on the Wii for the past few weeks, and honestly... a game in which you have to convince a psychiatrist that you want to marry your mother in your dreams, or partake in a sitcom about two rangers who are hiding a cow in their apartment just makes for a good ol' adventure. Looking forward to it.

I admit I giggled like 3rd grader at that. S&M on your Wii?!?

Never played the game, but I've always heard it was cool.

Does that stand for "Sam and Max", or did they come out with some new "Whip" and "Chain" controllers for the Wii?

But on topic, anything Monkey Island is pure awesomeness!

Pre-order fromthier site and paid with Paypal, and its not showing up in My Games. So I sent en email. Looking at thier forums I'm not the only one.

Probably a minor thing but just pointing it out.

I cant wait to play it.

You know, we used to use the term "spank" when I was a kid, much like kids use "pwn" these days.

"Tom totally spanked Jimmy playing S&M last night!"

Not just Tales, but also The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition from LucasArts.

I've already pre-ordered Tales of Monkey Island. I loved both seasons of Sam & Max, and really enjoyed SBCG4AP as well. I've yet to play the Wallace & Gromit games, but since I get a free episode with my pre-order, I'll probably get a W&G game (which will then make purchasing the whole thing cheaper, if I decide I want the rest).

YES! YES! YES!!!! I've played The Dig (which was pretty good, not great) but I've never played Loom. Lucas Arts discontinued their archive game packs before I could get more than one (Monkey Island 1 & 2, The Dig, Full Throttle and a couple other games were in the pack I got). Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure are both also SCUMM adventure games, so I might pick those up as well (maybe Steam will do an adventure game pack as a bundle).

Let's see, we've got:
* Telltale games' lineup of games on PC, Xbox 360 and Wii
- Sam & Max
- Wallace & Gromit
- Monkey Island
- Strongbad's Cool Game For Awesome People
- Bone
* Zack & Wiki (Wii)
* Professor Layton (DS, 4 games in Japan, only one release in the US so far)
* A whole bunch of other Nintendo DS games I haven't had a chance to play:
- Hotel Dusk
- Phoenix Wright series
- Jake Hunter
* Numerous Flash games
- Griswold The Goblin (a series)
- The Several Journeys of Reemus
- Others I wish I could remember at the moment
* A Vampire Story (PC)

All that, plus more I'm sure, and you don't consider it a resurgence yet?

Apparently Lucas Arts CEO Darrell Rodriguez told Joystiq, "On iPhone, you know Apple's policy that we can't talk about a release until it's ready to release. But it would make sense that we would do something like that if we were to go in that direction ... wink wink, nod nod." So, LucasArts classics could wind up on iPhone or PSPGo

Nope, given the fact that a small percentage of gamers played those games with the exception of Pheonix Wright and Sam and Max, I'd hardly call it a comeback for the genre.

We're getting there, though.

I think Telltale's online episodic games are a great way to bring back the adventure game. Quick, cheap games with an ongoing plot throughout self-contained episodes. How is that NOT awesome? :D

Armed and DangerousLEGO
Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure
Star Wars Battlefront II
Star Wars Republic Commando
Star Wars Starfighter
Thrillville: Off the Rails

Those are some real grade A classics there. Man, if they use a, "Starfighter didn't sell at all so why bother with the X-Wing/Tie Fighter games." excuse later I will carpet Lucasarts with rage fill hate bombs.

To add more , with the DS and PC being king-

Both Syberia games (DS)
Sprung (PC)
Rhiannon (PC)
Time Hollow (DS)
Mystery Case Files (DS)
Diabolik (DS)
Flower Sun and Rain (DS)
Broken Sword (Wii and DS)
Klonoa (Wii)
Another Code (Wii and DS)
Agatha Christie (Wii)
Cate West games (DS)
CSI games (DS/Wii/PC)
Lux-Pain (DS)
Dracula: Origin (PC)
Inkheart (DS)
Trace Memory (DS
Still Life (PC)
Sprung (DS)
Outcry (PC)
Touch Detective (DS)
Rhiannon (PC)
Dark Fall (PC)

My fave company is The Adventure Company, who basically publishes most of the adventure games above (Wii-DS and PC only)

Also, I meant a resurgence in LucasArts adventure games. Pays to be specific around here, no? Although I'll be damned sure to look some of those others up. Looks like I'll be borrowing my daughter's DS, since I didn't see much for the PSP in there. :unibrow:

Icarus

I pre-ordered Tales of Monkey Island as well + made a big contest for it over on Abandonia where I'm admin.

Personally, I'm sceptical about the whole Steam move. I already own all their games in original big boxes anyway, but I would still applaud them if I felt they did it for more than just to squeeze another drop of cash out of those games (and I predict €10 for those old games, which is quite a lot).

May I remind you all how badly LucasArts has treated adventure fans in the last decade? Sam & Max 2 got cancelled when it was practically finished (which made Steve Purcell start his own company in anger), they released a bunch of oldies as "Windows XP" versions but tons of people had trouble getting the games to run and LucasArts were too lazy to give any real support for those games which meant that lots of abandonware forums suffered the many "Sam & Max won't work!" posts  For a company that has been publishing shitty Star Wars games for the past 10 years and little else ... meh, I'll wait and see what the angle is.

#39

Chummer

Been playing it. Pretty fun, though I think it's atad easy. Then again it's only the first episode.

I got stuck on ONE part so far due mainly to doing something out of order.

#40

figmentPez

figmentPez

I'm enjoying it so far, but as yet it's not as good as CMI. LeChuck's voice just doesn't have the same rumble. The secondary character designs are pretty bland. And the control scheme is a little annoying. Other than that it's fantastic. The music is nostalgia inducing. Gubyrush, Elaine, LeChuck and another major charcter [spoiler:241saf2z]The VooDoo Lady[/spoiler:241saf2z] all look fantastic. The other voices are fantastic, especially Guybrush (who is just the same as ever) and Elaine. The island I've seen so far is beautiful, and the humor is great. Some of the little bits have had me actually laughing out loud.

#41

Just remember, folks, this is still just the first episode. Give Telltale the benefit of the doubt until about the second or third episode or so. That seems to be when they tend to hit their stride with their series. That seemed to be the case with a lot of their other series, such as Sam & Max (which started getting really good by the third episode and the whole second season was awesome) and Strong Bad (first one was meh, the rest were great).

As a fan of Telltale's stuff, though, I'm incredibly happy to hear everyone enjoying Monkey Island.

#42

A

AngelofBitterness

Well I got faith in Telltale - their goal is to make the games fun and enjoyable to complete without throwing incredibly hard puzzles our way - as long as the games are not TOO easy (like Dreamfall's) I'm fine with it.

But I will get them both next month probably.

#44

Icarus

The Good:

- great humour
- graphics are spot on (in fact, the new Guybrush is wonderfully animated - the SOMI remake makes Guybrush look terrible in comparison)
- interesting story
- good dialog
- great music as usual
- good voices

The Bad:

- another dreary console-friendly control scheme. I just want to click to move - was that so hard to implement for the PC version? Why force us to drag and hold and rotate to move? It's annoying if you got to move around a lot
- the camera views are a bit wonky at time
- why give dialog choices if you're going to ignore ALL of them? I know this was done in previous games but at least let the game actually use your answer *sometimes*.
- the puzzles are too obvious

Let's look at Secret Of Monkey Island:
- the puzzles required good timing and some proper thinking. They weren't obvious and usually very clever

So far in the first episode of TOMI:
- the game nearly spells out what you need to do. The solutions tend to be straightforward and there's very few secondary puzzles to complete.

It's a great game if you're in it for the story & atmosphere but for an adventure veteran like me, it's too easy.

#45

General Fuzzy McBitty

General Fuzzy McBitty

I tend to agree that continuing these stories are good, but when I played Sam & Max Season 1, I felt like the entire thing was a little dumbed down. It was simple. MAKE ME THINK!

#46

figmentPez

figmentPez

For those that don't know, you can use WASD for movement (which I found much preferrable) as well as click-drag on the mouse. You can also use Shift to run. Still, I would have liked to just have a click to move like in Sam & Max or Strongbad.

#47

rvdleun

Just finished it myself. Although it's definately not too challenging, adventure-wise(although you may want to turn off the hint-dialogue in the options menu), there is a Monkey Island feeling there that felt very good. Had a blast with the first episode, and looking forward where the storyline is going.

Is anyone else doing the treasure hunt thing? It's kinda boring so far, and really simple. I hope they either make the puzzles more interesting, or just give us the, rather underwhelming, bonus stuff (so far it's been one wallpaper I couldn't download because of a website error, and some avatars I probably won't use).

Also, the Lucas Arts twitter feed says that Monkey Island is on the iPhone now. Their link was to the iTunes store, so I have no idea about details, because stupid Apple thinks I need to have iTunes installed just to see what they have available. Good grief, like I'm really enticed to install iTunes without even knowing what they have. Screw you Apple.

JONJONAUG

So I finished the episode (it's out now by the way).

That was the single best episode Telltale has ever produced, and that includes Sam and Max Season 2 Episode 5.

Tales is now on Curse of Monkey Island level, and if Telltale keeps their reputation for outstanding endings (something the Monkey Island series has always been lacking, somewhat excepting the first game) then it'll be the best in the series.

Seriously, HUGE freaking spoilers ahead. If you haven't finished the episode yet, or plan to play it any time in the future, or even think that you might at some point feel inclined to play it then don't go on.
HOLY SHIT!

First this was all funny and stuff with some of the best jokes and clever puzzles with satisfying outcomes that I've ever seen in an adventure game.

Then suddenly it gets all dark and Guybrush dies and "How appropriate, you fight like a pox-infested cow" and I was all HOLY CRAP and then I shit myself.

Personally I preferred "Night of the Raving Dead" to "What's New, Beelzebub?" but I agree that "The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood" is better than either. The puzzles were mostly fun, the humor was fantastic, the plot was twisting and full of surprises, the voice acting continues to be fantastic, the characters are great and the graphics range from acceptable to hilariously awesome.

Considering that Stan is the icon for this episode I don't think it's a spoiler to say that he's back in this episode, and so is his jacket! Telltale did a great job of bringing the 2D graphical gag into 3D.

I'm also continuing to love Morgan LeFlay. *sigh* So cute (though a little less so in profile). Between her and Elaine TMI certainly has much more desirable female characters than the Sam & Max games.
