The Unique Team Update
Beware of the Guard Dog.... and a whole lot more. Is this some sort of joke? I'm so confuzzled.

It's got achievements and faked-up in-game art to make it look like a playable class.

EDIT: Okay, I think I wrapped my tired brain around it. Some fans came up with a mock-up concept, and the TF2 blog is just acknowledging their work.

My first thoughts on reading "Guard Dog" where "So Engy's are getting a Spy Detector in their update? Awesome."

So... I can't be the only one who thinks that the thing is deadly adorable, right?

It'd be cool if this was real though, like a third team for certain maps.

For example, what if there's a new map mode, perhaps called Capture the Steak (CtS). RED and BLU start out out on opposite ends of the map. In the center is a steak. It is guarded by the third group of players, the dogs. Each dog can only attack one particular team, which is randomly determined (this is to prevent griefing). When one team captures the steak, some of the dogs that attacked them become aggressive to the other team instead (this is to follow Valve's usual policy of giving the winning team an advantage).

It could work, you know.

The first thing that came to my mind was similar, I thought it was going to be a mobile sentry of some sort.

Likewise.

Possibly an alternative to the sentry gun. Not as powerful with low HP, but has autofire, follows the engie around, and lets the engie act as 2 units on capture points just like scouts.

Probably has about the same firepower as the lvl 1 sentry gun.

That would hardly be a problem if it moved around. It would literally need to do less than the pistol if it moved around to be balanced.
