Terrifying Stop-Motion Shadow Art

Now, it could just be a very cool theme added to an animation, or it could be what it purports to be and is an inhuman level of detail and time wrapped in an extremely cool package.

That's a buttload of bmp files! Holy hell!

I'm leaning towards them creating the animation first, then printing out each frame individually, with adjustments for how they wanted to the camera to make each frame appear, then stop-motioning it back together.

That makes a lot of sense.

Really cool animation, though. I would never have the patience to do anything like that.

I've seen that animation somewhere before, not as a stop-motion video. Awesome idea though.

I hate the part where I was able to identify all the characters.

After I watched this video, I knew you'd be able to. :)

Good stuff though.

Did you also know that I'd be able to name the locations in the backdrop?

Yes and no, because all I saw as the locations were Black and White. Maybe you could glean extra meaning from that, but not me.

Most of it doesn't have backgrounds. There were a couple near the beginning. Like the house. And the tree.

I thought you were recognizing the backgrounds that belonged to the original animation... not quite what I am trying to say. The original animations' backgrounds that the masked animation was ripped from...

Or, you've been in that guy's apartment.

Something like that. If you look at the edges of the pictures they are always in flux, to show a level of imperfection which implies stop motion, yet somehow the images themselves are always seamless. That's simply not possible to do. I'm guessing it was a variation on a green/blue screen in the pictures and he filled them in with the animation.

Still, cool thing.

Yeah, I see what he means. Somebody doing this on a GRID tabletop would be able to align it better, but the paper rockets back and forth in a very "organized erratic" fashion.

That is amazing, I don't understand why the OP find them scary.

Out of curiosity, what anime was it?

None. It's a series of top-down SHMUPs called Project Touhou.

edit: Coincidentally, the character in my signature is also from a Touhou game, just not one of the ones featured in the video.

edit2: Remembered incorrectly. Character from signature is in the video. Remembered after rewatching.

That's okay, Allen, we won't hold it against you.

It is impressive what one can do with the tracking software in After Effects.

This. Really even looking at the animation this is really obvious due to a bunch of 3D effects.

Also, apparently CNN did a report on this...by doing a report on the original video and claiming it was made using stop motion animation while showing footage from both the original video and the clip in the OP.

Finding a news report on Touhou fanworks (and a bad report rife with misinformation and poor research) instead of the actual games is both hilarious and completely expected.

I'd recommend Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Perfect Cherry Blossom, and Imperishable Night as these three are pretty much the best games in the series. PCB and IN in particular are two of the best shoot-em-up games I've ever played. The PC-98 games are difficult and the outdated graphics make it difficult to play, and 10-12 all have problems with massive difficulty increases over previous games (the bosses are harder and if you continue you have to restart the stage from the beginning with only two lives, instead of right where you left off with a full stock).
