This is a test. Since we are no longer able to allow Guest posting because of spammers - which really, really pisses me off! - I added this little program that will allow anonymous posting in THIS SUB ONLY.

As this sub is for asking advice on any subject or for potentially embarrassing health questions, I wanted to make it a place where people can do so and feel comfortable doing so.

Please note that Admins can find out who is posting, so if you are a dick you will still be able to get infractions. Don't be a dick.

D'oh!

If you post as yourself and then anonymously it WILL MERGE THEM! But it won't if you post anonymously and then as yourself.

Again, only Admins can see who you are (and we could have before with IP addresses) and it is ONLY FOR THIS BOARD.

And maybe the NSFW board if I get a wild hair.

Unfortunately, the Spy feature also shows who's been posting...

So if I'm talkin' bout my inverted scrotum, can every admin see who it is, or do they have to dig to find out who I be?[DOUBLEPOST=1345837227][/DOUBLEPOST]Also, will it merge if I post anonymously after I post as me?

Damn Spy. Crappity crap.[DOUBLEPOST=1345837335][/DOUBLEPOST]So would you rather have Spy or this?

But... I live my entire day using the Spy feature. It's so much smoother than the What's New? feature.

On the other hand, it does kind of make me feel a little too connected to what's being said.

Did that whole 'making people subscribe to subforums' like the forum games subforum work out, or did we just do away with those subforums, because I never see anything from them on the Spy.

The subforum subscription didn't work because I would have had to use promotions and it never worked. If I did a promotion it was all or nothing. So if you didn't want to opt in the system didn't give a fuck and put you in it anyway.

I turned Spy back on for two reasons:

  • I would have to totally uninstall it and I've already screwed with the board uptime enough for today. Also, when I disabled it the tab stayed there.
  • The developers are trying to work something out to fix it.
I don't know how many people use spy but I think more will use Anonymous posting. Plus, with the ability to opt out of subs in the What's New it's not as necessary.

Also, since you've instituted the new security measures, couldn't people just create an alt to ask a private question? I know we've had issues with alts and altoholism in the past, but it is an option for this, right? As long as it doesn't get completely out of hand.

They certainly could, but that creates an additional user in the database and tends towards bloat. This way they could post it on their main account without having to resort to clutter.[DOUBLEPOST=1345839165][/DOUBLEPOST]
Oh, and to answer your question: Yes. You could. In fact, it would also remove the potential err of posting as yourself right before your anon posting and having it merge and giving your identity away to everyone regardless. Oh, and that you're listed in Spy under your real name despite posting as anonymous.
Spy is now buh-bye. Well, it's still there, but I have it turned off.

Though, I believe right now alts still have to be approved by Dave manually as well. This means no spontaneous questions can be asked.

You know, come to think of it.. Why did we need this feature again?
I added spam protection that means I no longer have to approve registrations.

I added this because I liked the ability for people to ask personal questions without worrying about what people would think about them. It allows them to ask personal questions without fear. It was why I liked guest posting, but spammers ruined that.

I certainly like the idea. And if it can be ensured they *stay* anonymous, then definitely keep it. But.. hypothetically... What would happen to those anonymous posts if in the future you'd disable the mod?
Let's try it out.[DOUBLEPOST=1345841021][/DOUBLEPOST]If I disable it it not only keeps them as anonymous, but takes away the ability of the admins to see who posted. We can still find out through IP, but it makes it a little harder.

Mini rant: I wish people would not copy paste so much from other sites or applications. I keep having to edit posts or copy/paste their text in another app myself just to be able to read it.

(black text on black background theme.)

Fixed text:

There's a button on the top left (eraser) that will erase all text formatting (sadly, not just color, but all of it including bold, alignment, etc..)
We should probably have that looked at, that was text copied and pasted from XenBlue Halforums unsubmitted text in Chrome to XenBlue Halforums text in Firefox.

Ha! Damned thing. Yeah, I wish cut/paste would just show up automatically unformatted.

Tell you what. Let me see if there's something I can do about it so it's no big deal. I know Jay harps about it all the time. Because he's Jay. :D
