TF2 FPS Problem

Halforums, I come to you in dire need of assistance. Basically, here's how it's been goin' down.

Around 2 months ago, I started getting extremely weird FPS lag in Team Fortress 2. What happens is everything will be playing just great, I'll be getting between 60-80 FPS on max settings, with absolutely no problems. Suddenly my frames will drop to 20 or so, even going to 10 in firefights. This will last about 30 seconds, then it will snap back to its initial framerate.

This happens about once every 2 minutes.

I've tried reinstalling the game, but no dice. Just a week ago I reformatted my computer, and while that seemed to fix the problem for a day or so, it was soon back.

Some important info:
- my computer: http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668240.php
- This happens on multiple internet connections
- This happens on EVERY TF2 server
- My computer isn't overheating
- Did I mention that I reformatted?

Where's Shego when she's needed?
I'm guessing she's going to tell you it happened to her, and you need to disable SLI to get it to work right, or something like that.

You mentioned it happens on every server, does it happen on specific maps? Specific areas of specific maps?

Yes, this is the only game that has problems. And yes, it happens on every map, in no specific places.

It's your multi-core rendering setting.

I had this problem in the past, I forget the "exact" fix, but I believe with that much info you can find what fix I had to do. If not, I'll defintely check my setting soon as I get home.

Holy shit! I disabled multicore rendering, and though I was getting 40-50 frames, it never dipped! I'll report back later tonight after scrimming to see if this was it!

Thank you Shego, really!

Yep, this totally happened to me with my new rig, when I got my latest video card. It drove me nuts for days.

Glad to hear it was the problem though, since it's such an easy fix.

That's good, but not quite as good as having to eliminate the full potential of the i7 Shego dropped so much money on.
lol @ having to disable multi-core rendering.

Question considering I'll be looking into a new rig and TF2 is one of my "big games:"

Is there any idea why it works for awhile and THEN becomes and issue? From what OP said he had been playing perfectly for a long time and then it suddenly went south.

Simple: They release new content every few months that has then tendency to break stuff for a while. For instance, the new Halloween Harvest Map would really slow down my PC.

That was my thought. Another possibility is graphics drivers breaking something. Methuselah might try making sure he has the latest version, or reverting back to an older version from before the problem started.

lol @ having to disable multi-core rendering.[/QUOTE]Ah. I remembered she'd had something like this happen to her earlier. Here I thought the multi-core they referred to was multi-GPU, not multi-CPU. Doing so won't really cripple the i7 any more than it would cripple any other multi-core CPU. The i7 has other architectural improvements that give almost 30% better performance than multi-core or GHz enhancements alone could achieve. Heck, even the 'lowly' 2.66 GHz i5 750 trades blows with the 3.33 GHz Core 2 Duo E8600 in most gaming benchmarks.

Either way, it is still humorous. She did spend a lot on graphics and CPU.

I'm failing to see the humor. The rig is still superior to my previous one in TF2 smoothness, graphic settings and fps. I also spent about 120 more for my processor, than the others that were being suggested....

You are having to disable certain features of your processor that are supposed to increase performance, in order to have a fps boost.

I just find that very ironic.

And yes, I did render a good deal of advice in that thread.
Everytime I have coffee or tea in my Halforum mug, I think of Shego.

I think CD just finds it amusing to have all that horsepower available, and then having to roll some of it back in order to get it to work properly.

Personally, I figure this sort of thing will dry up when they finally get rid of the last bits of cache contention/locking (one core has to wait while it loads something another core already has cached instead of just using the already-cached copy). All of that unnecessary duplication can really kill your framerate.

News flash:
Doin' the DP thing here to bring up some test results for that Hydra thing that was discussed earlier. Check 'em out.

This.

And Hydra looks better and better.

Also, why didn't they use GTX 295/285s and HD5870s?
Son, I am disappoint.

Another review of Hydra: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1093/1/

So after all my updating last night, I try and play TF2 today and it crashes to desktop everytime I join a game/server. *sigh*

I have Direct X11 installed atm though.

Just some info, during the crash I get the looping sound freeze.

I have a feeling this may be an issue with the Creative Sound Drivers I downloaded and had so much trouble with my MSI mainboard last night.
