NPR has released tracks now from the soundtrack for The Book of Mormon, a new musical created by Matt Stone and Trey Parker. As expected, it is awesome.

I bet he didn't like Team America either.

You know he may be right, however, until he actually sees the play I'm going to take his harsh words with a pretty serious grain of salt.
Now to his actual gripes, I haven't seen the play but I do love South Park (and boy I bet this guy hates it). So I assume TBOM would make me laugh, but that doesn't mean that he isn't right. I really don't now... and technically, since he hasn't seen it either, neither does he.

From someone who HAS seen the show (oh yeah, and is the top Theater Critic for the NY Times...for what that's worth)

From what I've heard and seen, the general jist of the musical is that while it DOES mock some of the particulars of the Mormon faith (some, like the real life "Turn it Off" method, deservedly so), it carries the undeniable message that as long as what you believe makes you a better person and harms no one, then faith isn't a terrible thing.

This is the exact same message they put forth in the episode "Joseph Smith" from season 7 of South Park. Hell, in that very same episode they have the Mormon kid blast Stan when Stan calls his beliefs bullshit.

A main reason they have little issues with Mormons but massive ones with Scientology. That shit is about as harmful as a cult gets.

It also doesn't help that the reason Isaac Hayes left the show is because the Scientologists told him that he would be thrown out and become "Fair Game" if he didn't get Matt and Trey to stop or if he didn't leave the show. Apparently Isaac came to Matt and Trey and basically broke down crying because he didn't want to abandon his friends, but he didn't want to give up his faith ether. He ended up leaving the show but Matt and Trey have made it perfectly clear that they don't blame their friend but rather the people who run Scientology.

Strange, this mentions nothing about minstrel shows???

It's almost as if they, I don't know, saw the whole show and wanted to give it a proper review, rather than stir the pot with bizarre and (ironically) offensive accusations of bigotry. Must be that 'decayed and decadent theatre elite' I've heard so much about. I hear they get up to some crazy shit.

While I have yet to see the show, I've had the soundtrack practically on repeat for my commute for the last few weeks. And I have to say, as rude and crude as it is (and it's probably even MORE so than you think until you listen to it all) the one thing it NEVER is, is mean. There is, in the end, something endearing about and rewarding for (and from) the 2 main Mormon characters.

Did you just quote and reply to yourself? Or is the forum messing up/am I seeing things?

I was posting in a flippant manner. So don't worry, you're not seeing things.

Except that giant clown right behind you. He's not real.

OR IS HE?
