The disappearance of the NSFW forum

#1

Bubble181

Bubble181

There isn't even a topic or an announcement about it? Dude :-(
Also, where'd the forum go?
Also, where'd the pictures go :-P
Also, how, where, and when are we supposed to post our NSFW stuff now? "properly tagged" in main is all well and good, but that'll get problematic - not so much for those posting NSFW content, but for those browsing from work :-P

Woah-ho, snarky.

Bubble181

Bubble181

It seems to be, yes.
And the NSFW forum was not just about pictures (or videos :eyeroll: ) you know. It's also where most of the gay/lesbian talk went, and some of the more interesting discussions about sexual matter. Heck, the "I got laid" thread was over there. Those were all less active there than they were here because a lot of people apparently don't venture over there, but still. I think pictures made up less than half the threads in there.

Also, what CK said.

#5

Twitch

He's right, how are we supposed to keep the gays out of our good Christian threads if you take away their forum? SEPARATE BUT EQUAL!

Yeah, there was a lot less random pic dumping than one might expect.

Mods can still see it. I wanted to see what kind of reaction I'd get if it went away. Nobody had posted in it for like a week.

I wouldn't mind if it was gone. On that note I also wouldn't mind those threads somewhere else, just tagged NSFW.

Even if people only post infrequently, it's not really doing any damage just sitting there, is it? Would it cost us to keep it, in terms of hosting or advertising or something?

Things are slowly disappearing, one by one.

Wait, hang on. I saw an episode of Star Trek: TNG about this once. Quick, computer! Continue relaying any and all vital signs for Sheg!

Okay, here's the reason. Go to Theater Hopper and click on the Thorum. Or just believe me when I tell you that it's just gone. Gone, gone, gone.

I've been trying to get Tom to link to us for his forum and he's been resisting. I think the NSFW might have been one of the reasons. IT'S STILL THERE! You just can't see it. So if I can get a pretty decently sized webcomic to link to us it'll stay gone, otherwise we can bring it back with no links/pictures/threads gone.

It's all about the survival of Halforum.

#29

Bubble181

Bubble181

...But if you keep the NSFW forum away, the NSFW posts will just end back up here. Or you'll start to seriously cut into the whole "we're free to do what we want" atmosphere that reigned when we'd just cut loose from HP. The first means that, in the end, it'll be worse for people linking here; while the second means one of HF's defining features si disappearing.
Mind rthat I don't say the NSFW forum is a defining feature of HF - it's been gone before - but.... I dunno. Can't really word it right, but once we really start limiting ourselves and deciding what we can and can't talk about and all that, I feel something's gone. *shrug*

#30

I could always simply password the NSFW forum. That way if people wanted to go there they could, but I'd have to give them the magic word.

I still don't understand why he didn't just have us be "his forum" with his own subsection when we moved.

If he needs the NSFW section gone to link us, I see it as an acceptable tradeoff.

#32

Lally

I don't care about the NSFW forum and never went there and really, don't care if it ever comes back, but I can understand what Bubs is saying too. If we change the forum for the purpose of being able to advertise it and get people to come here, then we may kill what we love about it (not that I'm saying the NSFW forum is what we love about it, I'm just generalizing because I've seen content sites take away their users' rights over being able to keep the site pretty for advertisers). I think rather than trying to hitch our wagon to a webcomic, it would be better to try and generate some of our own content. I know that's easy enough for me to say, as someone who has nothing to offer content-wise, but something about attempting to connect ourselves to someone else's content doesn't sit well with me for some reason.

Can't you set up the NSFW forum so it's only available to those that ask for access? Make it so when people register it looks the same as if they hadn't registered - no NSFW forum at all. Then they ask you, and you add them to the user group that has access to that forum.

Personally, I'm glad that it's gone - I don't link here (or suggest this forum to others, such as friends and family) because of it. Not that this would make much of a difference, but I suspect others have the same issue.

aw.

Beware the echo chamber effect.

#36

Lally

I think Adam's idea for having it invisible unless you're granted access will work better than having it be password protected if we're trying to pretty the place up for potential content providers. If someone comes in and sees the NSFW forum there and don't like it being there, he/she probably isn't going to click on it and then find out it's password protected.

#37

Shegokigo

Shegokigo

Invisible till privledges are requested sounds good, but how to let new members know that WOULD want to see it, to know about it?

#38

Bubble181

Bubble181

And on the chance of going against myself; having a password-protected NSFW area you can only get to after registering makes it seem much bigger and dirtier than it actually is . I mean, the fora I frequent with a hidden, pw-protected NSFW part are usually huge porn archives with free downloads; not just a place to chat about whether or not a finger up the ass is fun during a romp. And I'm certainly NOT advocating turning it into a huge free porn archive; on the contrary.

#39

Put it in the site rules (the post at the top of every forum that says "READ FIRST") - if they can't be bothered to read this post then chances are good they aren't interested in contributing good discussion to the NSFW area anyway.

-Adam

#41

bhamv3

bhamv3

I support the idea of giving access to people who ask for it.

Alternatively, the mods and admin could give users access when they determine a user is truly interested in sharing and contributing meaningful discussion in the NSFW forum. Sort of like, "Okay, you've shown you're not an asshat, can can be trusted with the NSFW board, so here you go."

#42

Gotcha. I was gonna say, as interesting as "do you like a thumb up your ass during some fucken" may /be/, "meaningful discussion" may not be the best word that applies.

#46

Aisaku

I think that having the NSFW section mentioned in the sign in agreement, and granted access only by mod decision would be best. That way it's out of the way for people who would like to ignore it, and it's as if nothing's happened to those who read and post in it.

I'm surprised I didn't notice it was gone...turns out most of the time I don't mind about things nsfw....

#47

Charlie Don't Surf

The Lovely Boehner

I didn't notice it was gone since my bookmark goes just to the general forum and I never look around in the others. And from what I did see, the "meaningful/intelligent" conversation thing is a bit of a misnomer. Maybe it's more uh, relative to the rest of halforum at best.

#48

Invisible is good. It'd be nice to see some new traffic.

#49

Bubble181

Bubble181

Well, to be fair, the NSFW was the forum I checked first whenever I came here - and yes, for the *posts*. There were very few, it was clear what they'd be about, and rthey were usually somewhat witty/funny (or interestin :unibrow: :eyeroll: ). Less of a mixed bag than General.

And how can "not be an asshat" be a requirement to get in, if Shannow's a mod?

Hey, I think it's absolutely legitimate discussion. I don't see why talking about that is any more or less "meaningful" than talking about, say, the new race for the Horde.

:) And curiosity is a good thing. But we're not mincing words; we're not discussing Moby Dick. We're discussing Moby's dick. Which really, Bubble, is probably just as masturbatory as the new Horde race. I don't think I ever implied that was "meaningful discussion" either.

#68

Bubble181

Bubble181

Hey, I'm not arguing it *is* especially meaningful discussion, far from it. To me, it came off as if you were saying discussion there was, inherently, less meaningful than the discussion here, which I disagree with.
Otherwise, of course, I do agree that we won't exactly be talking Shakespeare there. Sooner Shaking Spears.

#69

ElJuski

I'm saying that all discussion on this board rarely raises the bar towards a further understanding of the human condition, and just making sure you all damn well know it :zoid:

#70

Bubble181

Bubble181

You'd be wrong.
La condition humaine can be observed in all human communication, so even - and even, especially - the so-called "meaningless" chatter on these boards can give insights and allow a fuller understanding of the problem that is life.

#71

ElJuski

ElJuski

uhhuh kk

#72

Bubble181

Bubble181

What? You want meaningful discussion, I can give you meaningful discussion. I tend to turn off half my brain when entering here, that doesn't mean it isn't there :-P

Want to talk about how Victor Hugo is a greatly skilled artist at language, because he succeeds in making stories that last the ages, written beautifully and melodically, evocative, strong, and yet, still manages to use only relatively simple words, avoiding the more upclass, more flowery verb tenses and phrase turns in French? (This makes him great in an educational environment, btw :-p)

#73

ElJuski

ElJuski

You're completely missing the point, champ. I'm not making a call to arms for entirely intellectual debate. I'm just calling what we do with what it is. To rationalize it otherwise, I think, is completely masturbatory and time consuming. Whenever there is something that goes on that requires more than two brain cells and a certain appreciation for intellectualism (and that does happen here too), then that's fantastic too.

halforum - just turn your brain off and it's a good forum

#75

Bubble181

Bubble181

Oh, sure, but in that case, we're in full agreement, mind. Like I said, the only reason I objected was because I thought you were negatively comparing the quality of discussion there, with discussion here.

You're perfectly right, otherwise.

So, Moby's Dick. What a dork, huh?

It seems like we keep having this debate about should we or should we not have a NSFW forum and if we do, what do we do with it. Why not just have a final vote or something? Seems like everyone has already decided if it's a legitimate place for not work appropriate discussion or just another porn dumping ground.

After that we have to have our bi-monthly "how many subforums should we have?" debate.

#79

Bubble181

Bubble181

One less than we have now. I vote we integrate Comics and Games :-P

#80

Allen who is Quiet

Allen, who is Quiet

I vote we make a theater hopper discussion area as a subforum in general and get rid of the comic talk area all together. each update gets a new thread in the th area.

nsfw should be like the podcast discussion area, where you need special permissions to see it. if you want to be able to go into the nsfw board, you have to ask or something.
