The End of 8-Bit Theater. Officially. Finally. After like... 3 weeks of ???

So Brian finally, in a "by the way" posting, confirmed that 8-Bit theater ended a few weeks ago with the strip that's been up for a while. http://www.nuklearpower.com/2010/04/17/forum-again-plus-stickers/. While I know he's the type to make jokes at the reader's expense, I think confirmation much earlier on would have been appreciated.

Well he did say he was ending the comic as soon as he took care of some loose ends... i guess that was it.

Aw, I was hoping for a reaction shot from our boys, BM and Thief in particular.

Brian trolls his audience HARD, so this is par for the course. I'm slightly pissed, as nothing was resolved, but I guess he's just tired of it.

Actually, I think he said that he had a couple more comics to go, and then only had that last one.

EDIT: Ah, found the post: "No, 8-bit isn’t quite finished yet. We’re done with the meat of the thing, all that’s left is a page or two where we throw the bones into the trash." So, I guess he didn't actually say there would be more than one, but I was expecting more plot arcs to be concluded. As much as he pulled from old comics there were a lot of characters, like the real light warriors, that never showed up at the end.

Well, the real light warriors did show up. After saving the world.

I just would like some type of denouement. The way it ended just has me itching for a little bit of quasi-closure.

My bet? He's got the last few pages, but he's not going to release them online. They will only be in the book compilation of the strip, so he can fuck his fans even more.

Is he even allowed to compile a book? The art is nothing but sprites ripped form games.

Considering he has T-shirts for sale with their sprites, it's likely he could do a book. It has to do with Fair Use laws I think.

Yay, I can finally remove this comic from my list of semi-weekly checks.

I'm not sure if Fair Use extends to thousands of pages. This would be a tough one to determine. Brian might just figure it's not worth the trouble, considering all the 100% original work he's involved with now.

Brian released a rather cryptic comment that seems to be related to doing more 8-bit theater writing.

Huh.

Well if it's another fake ending this is the most complex one yet.

I can deal with the ending. What I don't like is his bellyaching about his fans, treating them like pests and forgetting that 8-bit Theater is what got him a shot at his other big projects in the first place. Playing jokes on fans with anti-climaxes is fine (I think it's funny); talking down to fans for giving their (sometimes negative) feedback is obnoxious. It reminds me of a certain webcomic artist...

8BT was the first webcomic I ever discovered and lead me to the whole webcomic community thang. Though I stopped reading it around strip 700, sad to see it ending.

From the Nuklear Power homepage. "Work on the 8-bit EPICLOGUE continues at full steam ahead. I’m gonna wait until the whole thing is done to post it though. It was written as a single piece, it should be read as one too."

#18

Soliloquy

I get the feeling that after this final 8-bit update is completed, nuklearpower.com is going pretty much die and fade away.

Clevinger's got bigger, better things going on in his life now.

I think you right unfortunatly. The post right before the 8-bit one basically says Warbot is done. I'm still hopeful for more out of "how I killed your master".

He keeps saying that the Epilogue is nearly completed and that we should be eagerly expecting it next week.

Does anyone else get the bad feeling that the Epilogue is going to consist of a 1 panel comic with the caption "Everyone eventually died. The end." ?

He is such a smug prick, I wouldn't be surprised.

#22

Soliloquy

I would be surprised, actually. I mean, it wouldn't be out of character for him, but I would be surprised.

Especially after his hint about the Armoire of invincibility.

Also, reading back on the older episodes, I'm surprised at how much 8-bit theater sucked for the longest time.

It was one of the first comics I ever read online, and I when I started reading, the writing was entertaining. But in the beginning? That's just the kind of bad writing that would get a new webcomic ignored these days.

I loved the art, but can anyone fill me in on all the cameos and game references? Who is that eating with Red Mage and White Mage in the beginning? The references to rats tail and the moon make me think it's Cecil from FFIV, but why would he still be a dark knight and not a paladin?

#27

Baerdog

I think the guy eating with Red Mage was Dragoon.

Did they put the rats tail in FF IV as well? I know it was a quest item in the first FF.

Ah, you're right. According to an 8-bit Theater wiki, Sarda teleported him to the moon, I'd forgotten about that.

There's still a lot of other references I don't really get. Like all the quests that Fighter and Black Mage are talking about near the end, and who all the characters in the background are.

Three of them were the beginnings of Final Fantasies VII, VIII, and IX. Not sure about the last one, though I suppose X would be logical.

That was a nice wrap up there. I think Brian can be officially forgiven for "ending" it the way that he did before he started work on the epilogue. Since he neglected to mention the artwork was going to be hand drawn I kinda expected sprites and something more along the lines of "Fighter went on to..... and the Black Mage eventually blew himself up and didn't recover" ish. So yeah. Really good ending. Well worth the time it took to put together. I think he did 8-bits' fans proud.

As far as other Cameo's. The first panel has that Cornerian Knight chasing that page per orders of the king.
The inn is obviously a themed restaurant to honor the "official" Light Warriors (Garland, Bikke, and Vilbert) and those who helped them along the way such as the King and the Witch. Not the real characters, but just folks in costumes.
But I'm sure that's actually Princess Sara on Page 4 Panel 2.

Yes, you had to bring a rat tail to get the ore to forge excaliber.
