Too blown away to comment coherently

I will say that the thought went through my head that "this might be the best horror movie of all-time" and wasn't immediately dismissed

also: stay through the credits

I'm torn... you usually don't troll about movies... but you do troll a hell of a lot...

I am dead serious. I loved the movie. I used full punctuation and capital letters and everything.

All I've seen have been the TV ads, and the distinct lack of Bruce Campbell in them makes me say, "fuck this movie."

There are literally hundreds of great movies without Bruce Campbell in them

also
stay after the credits

Why did you spoiler that when you didn't spoiler it in your first post? Lol

Yes, but Bruce Campbell is iconic to the Evil Dead franchise. To imply that he was not a part of this one was a dealbreaker for me.

this is a really stupid argument, and I give up since you're the loser in it anyways since you're not seeing a fucking great horror movie

I probably wasn't going to see it anyway. No time or money for any movies lately.

So I win. :p

Well there ya go then. I'm satisfied.

Still not likely to go see it, but for the reasons I'm not likely to go see any movie at all. Hell, I can't even find the time to watch any DVDs or streams at home right now.

Unless we suddenly become bad parents and drug Hailey so she'll stay asleep through a movie like this, I guess I'll be seeing it in three months when it hits rental.

It's a pretty terrible, predictable and cliche movie. I actually recommend you don't go see it. It's more of a rental.

I say: Terrible movie, complete tripe. You'll say: See? Now you know it's good.

You make it so easy

I don't like most horror movies (I think it's the idea of the genre, I like a lot of the ones I see), but I'm glad to hear that the franchise is doing okay.

Except people tend to have real opinions based on what fade says, they only joke about him hating everything.

You on the other hand, well you saw your own response.

I really really loved Cabin in the Woods, but I think I like Evil Dead better since at least the tone is more consistent and the ending a lot more focused.

Definitely looking forward to seeing it. First time I watched it (ED2 was the first one I saw I think) I really wanted it to be scary, and it wasn't. Drag Me to Hell revitalized my hope for the horror genre, Cabin in the Woods accelerated it farther, I hope this can keep that trend up.

It's not great or anything, but I thought it was good. You'll have to put up with the usual characters making stupid choices, but it throws in gore worthy of the Evil Dead (virtually all practical effects, aside from a little CG here and there) and manages to actually pull some surprises. Hey, I'm just happy it's not another bad horror remake.

I thought the choices mostly made sense, especially consideirng the various states of shock everyone had to be in

If it doesn't have any of the tongue in cheek self-awareness of Evil Dead 2, I have no interest in seeing it.

I loved Evil Dead for the same reason I love Brain Damage/Dead Alive. It's aware of the conventions of the genre and makes fun of them.

In another way, it's what made Cabin in the Woods as unique/amazing as it was.

Except the original, first Evil Dead was supposed to be a straight up horror flick. But even Raimi himself admitted that it was so amateur in so many ways that it wound up becoming an unintentional camp classic. Hence Evil Dead 2, which remakes the first and just says "Screw it. Let's Larry, Curly, and Moe this shit!"

This new one is meant to be taking what the original was meant to be: legit horror. Apparently the gore is off the charts and the majority of it is practical, so I'm down for that alone. Plus, MovieBob gave it a solid thumbs up and I share his opinion on most things.

When people talk about how good Evil Dead is, they're rarely referring to the first one.

Oh, I'm not arguing with that at all. Evil Dead 2 - and to a lesser extent, Army of Darkness - is what people are most familiar with because it's what really put Raimi on the map.

#37

Tress

Tress

So, I don't care about gore one way or the other. For me, it does not enhance the horror aspects of a good horror movie at all. I'm much more into tension, fear of the unknown, subtle terror, etc. Is the new Evil Dead actually scare in that way, or is it relying entirely on gore and the "ick factor"?

#38

Charlie Don't Surf

Charlie Don't Surf

There's some unsettling stuff, but I will grant it's mostly well done jump scares, relentless audacity, and artfully done brutality.

I also have to give props to all the practical effects. The score was also REALLY good.

#39

Tress

Tress

Based on that, I don't think I would enjoy it. It just doesn't sound like it fits my tastes in a horror movie. But, I'm glad to hear it's well done and people are enjoying it. The last thing the world needed was another shitty remake.

I only watched the first Evil Dead once when I was 19. I thought it was pretty fucked-up; I didn't find it funny at all. Doubt I'll ever watch it again, but I remember just gaping at the TV for most of the movie.

The first movie wasn't supposed to be funny.

#43

Shawn

I never really enjoyed the original Evil Dead. I remember seeing Army of Darkness first when I was young. Then when I realized Army of Darkness was a sequel to Evil Dead 2, I picked that up. I wanted to get Evil Dead first, but this was back when the original production company that owned the rights had already gone out of business, and the rights were being negotiated over by other companies. When I got Evil Dead 2 I didn't like it nearly as much as Army of Darkness. I was rather surprised by just how gory and disturbing it was. Course that was when I was much younger, and now my opinions have switched. When I finally did see Evil Dead I pretty much decided that one viewing was enough. It wasn't funny like the other two. It was just a straight up, bad horror film that tried to be as gross as it possibly could. I just didn't appreciate it that much as an individual film. Plus Ash in Evil Dead is nothing like the Ash in the other two films. The first version is kinda depressing after you've seen what the character is capable of.

100% sober. I went to see it alone late at night without anyone to ferry me around.

Another coin in the it's awesome camp. That movie was fucking rad. The only downside was a lot of the shitty dialogue. Everything else was balls out rad.

#51

CynicismKills

CynicismKills

I agree with Red Letter Media's review in a few places. The overall movie's great, it could have been better if the characters weren't so bland (the Deadite dialogue was hilarious, though). It's like they over-avoided the usual stereotypes in horror protagonists and hit too far on the opposite end of the spectrum.

Also, a couple parts in the trailer that didn't make the cut.

Mia peeking out and singing that "gonna get you, not another sleep, time to go to sleep" wasn't there at all, and instead of saying "cut it, cut it" she says "don't cut it." Curious to see what'll be in an unrated cut of the movie.

Fuck, that final climactic shot had everyone in the audience just agape. That shit was sensational.

Usually horror gore doesn't bother me, but

Mia ripping her hand off made me wince hard. That and Eric getting the needle under his eye. I'm really bad about things to do with eyes, so that shit set me off in a massive shudder. Ugh.

But yeah, the whole final confrontation was fantastic. Can't wait to get this movie on BluRay.

#54

Frank

The machete through the shelves and dragging across Mia's leg was another. It wasn't the gore that made me wince, but the unbridled brutality of it.

Okay, yes, it's awesome. Jake put his hand in front of my face at all the appropriate moments... I got a little queasy a few times.
