The evolution of Guitar Hero

Now I know many people here really dog on the whole Guitar Hero genre, pretty much saying that people who play these things are losers not accomplishing anything (as if that makes them different than any other game out there). But Harmonix is taking the next step: The pro guitar has 'buttons' (which are shaped to feel like strings) for every fret position on the guitar. There are multiple 'strings' you flick to strum it. When you learn a song in pro mode, the exact same fingerings will play that song on a real guitar. That's pretty awesome.

Guitar Hero fucking sucks. Rock Band is good.

I think the really important thing to glean from that article is you can now plug a real guitar into the game! So it would now be possible to use the game to learn how to play! Or, if you already can play, instant backing band to your favorite songs! That sounds pretty sweet. I may have to get a next gen console now.

Oh, also that link is all about Rock Band 3, not Guitar Hero.

Yup, that's pretty sweet too. I see the plastic button guitar as an intermediate step...one where you can play and still do alright, even if your string-pressing or picking skills aren't that great. Once you start developing real skills, though, I can imagine most people would go the whole real-guitar route.

Yeah, I had lost interest in the whole music game genre around the time of the first Rock Band, but man, this new is one is really something else.

I've been saying for years that these games needed keytar and it is finally here! I may have to wrangle some friend to go in on Rock Band 3 now.

Being able to use it to learn guitar for real now is really neat too. I hope they expand the idea to the other instruments as well.

Shiiiiiiiiiat, this looks shweet, this could actually work making me learn an instrument....

And btw Baerdog, your avatar matches perfectly to your post. :D

And afaik, playing the drums on these games can come pretty close to playing the real ones? (Just guessing here, never played rockband/GH nor play an instrument myself...)

They are doing it for drums and keyboard as well. I made a thread about this a few days ago.

I am totally psych on this. I love playing rock band 2 drums and hoping I can transition to the real thing. The keyboard and guitar is pretty sweet too. I am not good with keyboard, but I might end up learning the guitar :)
