The Jay Show proudly announces its first interviewee... ThatGuyNick.

There were many... many fine candidates but I went with whom I believed would be providing me the most ease as I get comfortable with the interview process. Furthermore, I think it should be a very entertaining adventure. As Nick mentioned in his "I'm IN" post his interview will be a Ventrilo based... thus it should be a very interesting and be .... a risque... adventure.

And thus... fine people of Halforums, I encourage you to send me your discreet PMs and try to bamboozle Nick with your own questions.

I've been preparing with a few questions of my own... and I'll schedule with Nick for a time/place for this interview to take place....

Interview Part 1 - http://www.2shared.com/audio/KXsVNLKz/Nick_Interview_Part_1.html
Interview Part 2 - http://www.2shared.com/audio/uTmKgWrb/Nick_Interview_Part_2.html

A few notes :

- Nick was having some issues with his headset which for some reason worked perfectly fine before the interview then suddenly stopped working for a few minutes. Then when he was able to make it work again... well... it was no where near the same quality. When he boosted his microphone too much it caused too much back noise. thus why he'll sound far more quiet than I did.

- I did boost his sound to 200% and heard him fine but in the recording it left it a bit to be desired. The next time I'll prepare this more accordingly as this was a bit out of my hand and I was a newbie. :)

- This was a LOT of fun, will do again. I like getting to know people. And for SHAME PEOPLE, no one told me he's a WORLD ACCLAIMED PUBLISHED AUTHOR... FOR SHAME.

I know I'm not the only one here who has good audio editing software, but I admit I want a crack at it. I downloaded your WAVs, just want to see if I can clean them up. If I can make them sound noticeably better, then I might want a chance at the originals.

It's all gonna have to wait until tomorrow morning, though. Got a promise with a pillow.

Just finished listening. Interesting interview. I think this will work out, but Dave brought up a good point at the end. I think there needs to be a little more prep ahead of time, and you have to eliminate the dead spots. There are enough points of dead air that it can kill the whole interview. Doesn't Dave have a history of working as a DJ? Have him help you out.

#49

Gusto

Gusto

I'm 4 minutes in.

And crying. :(

#50

Gusto

Gusto

So far I feel like I'm learning a lot more about Jay than Nick.

#51

Gusto

Gusto

I'll agree that the show needs a little more prep. Nick's posted about his novel on and off for the last few months which a little research would have unearthed. Having relevant questions like that would have also prevented 80% of the questions being overtly sex-themed and mostly hypothetical. I expected a couple sex questions but jeez, Jay, this isn't a Playboy interview.

Other than that, found it enjoyable except for the besmirching of my good name, and looking forward to future interviews when the process is a little more polished and Jay's found an interview format that works better for him. :)

#52

ThatNickGuy

ThatNickGuy

Your besmirching was all in good fun and not meant to be mean in any way, shape, or form. :)

#53

Jay

Jay

Thing is, there actually was prep work. Heck, 3 whole pages of it. There's only so much prep work you can do... and interviews can easily go astray, as it did, the Halforums way. :)

Don't ever forget though that this is a recreational thing and not a job for me, as long as it remains fun, and it was, I'll be happy to continue. However, I'm quite open (not as much as Nick when he goes camping) to working on the format and finding ways to make it more enjoyable, with the minimum of headaches for me. The audio issues, the lapses between speaking, the interview format, it'll come as we work out the kinks.

As far as Nick's book, I truly had no idea and after the interview he kindly researched for me where he actually posted the news... which of course was located in those gigantic "spam threads" like "Epic Win" and "Epic Rants".... which I never ever bother to read. Either way, such a feat is deserving it's own thread and should have never have been in those thread cellpools.

What would also help me would be more Bamboozlers. I got a total of 4 for LittleSin, 8 for Nick of different levels of use for the interview. "How are you baby girl?" "Tell me about your childhood". I mean, comon! LOL. More questions, especailly coming from the peanut gallery that weren't forthcoming beforehand would be appreciated. :)

And why is Gusto listening to my interview at 5AM?

Hopefully someone good at that sort of thing fixes the levels, having to listen to French McFrencherson at about 200 decibels to even hear Nick is not optimal.

Took me 2hrs to finish separating the first 30 min before I ran out of my available free time today. Geez you guys rattle on. I thought it was only going to be a 20min interview. I'll keep at it, here's hoping I finish before all interest fades.*

Jay, you're voice puts me in mind of the one officer on my watch. Your voices have the same cadence, you pronounce a lot of words the same way... it got a bit bizarre when he logged in for service whilst I was listening...

#69

Jay

That's funny.

Favorite question people?

Did Nick do a good job?

#70

Gusto

My favourite part is when you asked him if he would do Nathan Fillion, and he responded, "no power in the 'verse can stop me".

#71

Espy

Espy

That was really fun, both of you guys were really entertaining to listen to! I think the biggest thing aside from good audio processing to make it easier to listen would be just tighter scripting which will give it the polish that Gooosto is looking for.

Also why did both of you call Gusto, Gooosto? Is that the canadian pronunciation?

Favorite moment? When you played the sad trombone after his prom night story. Totally didn't expect it.

#72

Heh, I saw that coming a mile away. But then, I think me and the Jayster share a similar idea of humour. :D

And I pronouced it "Goosto" because...hell, I don't know. That's the way I've always pronounced it in my head.

#81

Jay

Always thought it was the way I pronounced it. I fucken played D&D with the guy for 2 years on Vent. It was either Gusto... "Me Gusto!" or Kevin. I'm shocked, if's it's like GUST-oh.

I think at some point in the interview I was going to say Shegokigo.... and I was like... I never said that word in my life, nor heard it and I was like SHEGODFDFMDEFFO.. or whatever that person's name is.

#82

Gusto

Gusto

I pronounce it guh-stow but I don't really care one way or the other. Calleja insisted on pronouncing it goo-stow and so I didn't give a shit if I ever mispronounced his name.

#83

PatrThom

PatrThom

Just finished remixing the Jay/Nick interview. Unfortunately, the forum only lets me upload 8MB max, and it's 8.5MB total. Hang on while I find somewhere to host it...

What service did Jay use, again? Ah, here it is:
http://www.2shared.com/audio/j3iyGS-h/The_Jay_Show-ThatNickGuy.html
It's just under 8.5MB in 24kb/s 22kHz MP3 format, playable by most modern devices, including some refrigerators.
Cutting out a lot of the dead space got the whole thing down to only about 45min, too.

Took a bit longer because at some point Dave shows up HI I'M DAVE AND I HAVE A HEADSET MIC THAT'S RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY MOUTH. WHY CAN'T WE HEAR NICK? Because we're all completely deaf now, thanks!

I'll keep the work files around a few days in case someone wants me to run off a higher quality copy, or something...

--Patrick

#84

Jay

Jay

Thanks Pat, I appreciate it. :)

A more enjoyable listening experience for others I'm sure.

Now gotta figure out how to set it up so that it's a better product coming out of the gate.... mmm..

#85

PatrThom

PatrThom

Post-production gets easier if you can manage to separate individual people onto their own channels (to allow for better dynamics adjustment later), but I know that is not always possible. Failing that, try to avoid "stepping" on each other during conversation, which makes manual separation easier. Pre-production is where you can really make or break an interview, though...make sure to test your levels/etc before you start recording.

I'm no professional, so I'm working more on stats than XP, but don't be afraid to do a retake if you think you need to. Easier to cut out a bad spot (dog bark/siren/cough) entirely than it is to cover it up.

--Patrick

#86

Espy

Yeah, thats what I wondered, if both people could record themselves talking then Jay could mix it together. BAM. 100% better sound quality.
