Nostalgia Chick: The Smurfette Principle

Funny episode, but I think it's over-analyzing the issue a little, to the point of confusion.

It's p-ai-nk!

She seemed almost depressed in the video.

The Smurfette Principle? I do believe someone's been browsing TVtropes a wee bit too much.

Err...you do know that the Smurfette Principle has been around a lot longer than TV tropes, right?

She definitely doesn't seem to be enjoying this any more...

I think I'd have liked this video more if it was more about making a point, like she was trying to explain something or get a viewpoint across. Instead it was more like "this happened, and later this happened" and I saw the similarities, but nothing seemed cohesive as a general statement or as particularly relevant to anything.

Also, while she may be the token female of the more popular elements of Channel Awesome, overall there are a number of women doing reviews and videos on TGWTG.

Also also, damn she looked fine in this one. :p Crap, gender issues!

It almost felt like she was complaining about being the Nostalgia Chick. I mean, I can see what she's talking about, because yeah, that's how shows and toys were marketed (and still are, I'm sure), but you also have to take into account that it's just what sells. If gender-neutral shows could do as well in merchandising as shows like Transformers and My Little Pony I'm sure you'd see a lot more of them.

That is what I got out of it also. It seems kind of strange, since she was the one that signed up to do the job by her own desire. It was a contest, after-all. Maybe she is just having a bad month, or the job is finally getting to her because she does not have as large of a presence as Doug. Who knows.

Wow.. She does seem depressed :( but I agree with her.

Nick (the station) seems to have issues about having female. Have you notice that there are NO female "action figure" at all that is related to nick?

Avatar the last air bender: no female figures (I would love to have them) even the new X-men SD version on nick NO FEMALE action figure.

I think it is just Nick has a thing against female.

All that this episode was missing was a box of tampons in the corner.

Yeah, I kind of got the point she was getting at, but she never seemed to get at the point herself. It was a really poorly-structured video.

I thought she nailed it pretty well. You guys should check out the Bechdel Principle sometime.

Nailed what really well? What was her point? Was she taking jabs at her position at GWG, or making a video about the Smurfette Principle? The whole thing could have been dubbed over with "No shit Sherlock" scrolling across the bottom.

Thought it was more about the latter than anything else. And, though you may "no shit sherlock", there might be a ton of other people to whom this might be a huge new experience.

Or in the least, some of those dudes might have stopped masturbating to listen to her for a second, instead of the usual "TEH HAWTNESS INTERNET CHIX"!

She ain't my cup of tea, either. But every time there's a new nostalgia chick, there's always a bunch of posts talking about sticking something in her muff.

Moderately attractive woman+ Interest in nerdy things= perception that she would bang a nerd "omg totally hawt"

I call it the Felicia Day factor.

That's my problem. I was waiting for the thesis statement of the video, but it went on and on. "In this show, there was this kind of girl. Later, there was a show with that kind of girl. This other show had a girl kind of in-between. This show had one like the earlier one I mentioned." It just never got anywhere.

Her statement is: "Holy shit, when you look at it, there are hardly any well-rounded female characters in the cartoons I grew up with! I wonder how this implicates the socialization of women, especially if these trends continue in adult media!"

#23

Hailey Knight

I don't think she ever got there. She hovered around it like an asteroid, but never really hit. And I think that would've made a more interesting video.

It could be both her realization that she's essentially the token chick and the education that she's recieving at film school that's opening her eyes more to it.

Mind you, the constant reminding that a girl was wearing pink doesn't help when she was wearing pink, herself. Unless that was intentional.

ElJuski

ElJuski

You can be a proud woman and still indulge in "girly" things. She doesn't necessarily have to dress and live counterculture because socionorms exist. It's just understanding what socionorms are, and not simply following a set of rules just because it is the way it is.

#26

ThatNickGuy

ThatNickGuy

Oh, I'm not saying she can't induldge. It was just the amount of criticism that she threw at nearly every cartoon. It was either purposely ironic (my guess) or a bad fashion choice in the face of what she's criticising.

#27

ElJuski

ElJuski

Right, and what I'm saying, is that it's not necessarily ironic or a bad choice. To her, it just is. Now, her quasi-criticisms as basically the female version of The Nostalgia Critic...well, that is probably a little bit worse for her cause.

I heard rumors that they're making a thinner, older, sexier Dora spinoff.
