The Protomen

How is it that, despite having heard of them, I had never actually listened to The Protomen? I just bought their two albums, and have discovered a rock opera set in a reimagining of the mega man universe, set in a dystopian world where Wily is the orwellian overlord, and humanity has lost the will to fight.

Both albums are awesome.

I've been finding myself rocking out to this one lately:

Interesting! This anything like The Black Mages remixes? If so I'm game when I get home.

I don't know what that is, so it's hard to say.

Both are concept albums. The first is about the hopeless dystopia Wily rules, the hero that dies trying to save it (protoman), and his brother who ventures out to avenge him.

The second album has a more rock americana sound to it, and is a prequel, of Dr. Light and Wily making the robots, and Wily using them to take over the city.

They take quite a few (awesome) liberties with the megaman story, and overall it has a much darker, bleaker atmosphere to it. You'd probably like the ending.

Youtube for "The Black Mages" and "Final Fantasy" sometime. You'll see what I mean.

If you want to listen to something like that, I heartily recommend The Megas and their albums Get Equipped and Get Acoustic. The first one is kind of like a Rock Opera retelling of Megaman 2 and the second one is an acoustic re-imagining of the first album that completely changes some of the tones in the songs. They also did a cross-over album with Entertainment System that covers most of Megaman 1.

Ok, I did.

First, the Black Mages win super bonus points for having Nobuo Uematsu as their keyboardist. But no, I wouldn't say the Protomen are like them. I'd liken The Black Mages to The Minibosses, as they do rock covers of existing music.

The Protomen do original work set in an alternate reimagining of the megaman universe.

Yeah, the Megas are more like the Minibosses as well, except that they DO make original bridging parts when appropriate (For example, if the song is a combination of two songs like they did for Dr. Wily in Megatainment.)
