First look: 'Transformers' morphs back into TV series - USATODAY.com

Looks like Transformers is going from animated to CGI for a new Hasbro TV series. A video is also available after a short commercial. The video doesn't give us much other than some lame CGI and 20 seconds of the Hasbro logo.

I like the comment in the article stating a toy line would follow. Way to state the obvious Sherlock.

"In a touch that should please fans of the original 1980s series, Peter Cullen and Frank Welker will reprise their roles as the voices of Optimus Prime and Megatron. Cullen also supplied Optimus Prime's voice in the films."

I actually prefer the animated versions over the CGI versions. The last few CGI versions have been awful... if you want it to look right, get Rainmaker Animation (formerly Mainframe Entertainment) to do it.

Look more like Reboot than Transformers.

That would have been sort of impressive, in 1993.

They guys who made ReBoot also made Beast Wars :)

Which was really mediocre CG. I can't comment on how good the story was, I hear it was good, but every time I tried to watch it the bland animation and graphics drove me off.

The first season didn't look great, but from Season 2 on it was greatly improved. Damn good for a show from the 90's.

What's with the need for human characters to anchor stories about transformers? Do they honestly think kids need kid characters to identify with as opposed to watching awesome robots beat the crap out of one another?

That was one of the many rad things about Beast Wars. The episodes didn't revolve around whiny human jazzholes running around while robots you only half-cared about occasionally shot at each other; instead, they created unique characters that worked to further their own agendas and backstab each other - and then they started shooting. No humans needed!

Also, I can't even tell you what sort of a character Wheeljack, Ironhide, or Bumblebee are, but I can describe intimately the relationship between Rattrap and Dinobot. Despite being a show whose main purpose was still to sell toys (transmetal I and II, anyone?), Beast Wars had some great things going for it, the most conspicuous of these perhaps being A., fantastic voice acting, B., great characters (for the most part; some like Tigertron and Terrorsaur were pretty underdeveloped and not used later in the series), and C., heart (not to mention humor!).

Besides, despite having somewhat crude animation (particularly for Season 1), I think Beast Wars had some of the best action of any transformers show. They not only had rad weapons (shit, yo, I spent half my youth drawing Rhinox's Gatling guns), but the action was presented in a pretty straightforward, at times Western manner. Watching the footage of that new show, the action seems flashy at first, but very bland in retrospect.

I am having trouble getting past the fact the human characters look like some bastardization of Jimmy Neutron and Pixar work.....I know this is a kids show, lets be honest here, but that preview to me makes it seem like this will be aimed at a MUCH younger market than previous outings. So I don't hold high hopes.

I'll still watch it though...I'm a tool like that.

Oh wow, the CGI is terrible, and the 3D animation is bad, particularly the talking. They may still be thinking that they can get by with the simply up and down jaw movements when a character is speaking, with only a few changes for real lips, but this clip was just jarring to watch...

But let's face it guys - these are 30 minute commercials to sell poor quality toys. Do you really expect anything more?

As much fun as my kids have watching these kinds of shows, when it's over with they more than make up for the show's lack of story/graphics/etc by taking the framework and draping their own ideas on it.

It's entertainment in both visual and physical/tangible form. While some critics disagree, I believe it doesn't have to be great entertainment to be enjoyable.

Or, as mom would say, "It's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick."

The little kid with glasses looks like he should be totally silent and playing adventures with a loudmouthed little girl.
(Note: Might be too vague. I'm referrencing Up. :p)

Yeah, I think we're going to see a lot more square faced men and round faced women in the near future because it worked so well for Up.

Just watched the opening five-parter. CGI was indeed pretty primitive, but the show was actually rather fun. Not nearly as kiddsy as you folks were fearing (hello torture sequences, zombies, and robot evisceration!), and there were some great lines here and there.

It looks as good as anything else that had "Transformers" on the title card.
