Is there a reason that some unicode characters, such as emoji, are stripped from posts?

It obviously supports some unicode, otherwise we couldn't post in chinese and other languages here.
But I should be able to paste in a unicode emoji and the forum should accept it - if the end user can't see it due to an older OS or browser that is fine, but the forum shouldn't be getting rid of them unless there's a good reason. Makes me wonder if there are languages the forum doesn't support, if it doesn't provide full unicode support.
