Unusual Resolutions?

#1

Cajungal

Cajungal

99% of people I talk to want to lose weight this year...or quit smoking. Come on, let's get creative! For those who choose to make resolutions, does anyone have any that don't come up often?

You can talk about the regular ones too. I was just curious if anyone had made any that were sort of different. I generally don't make them, but this year I have 4 short stories that I'd like to submit to magazines.

Jiarn

I've already been on my losing weight streak, yes I do plan on quitting smoking, but my biggest New Years's Resolutions are:

Spend even more time with my kids: teach my son the "classics" of NES and SNES days, help my daughter put together at least 5 3D puzzles (she's phenomenal at 2D large scale ones),

Do everything I can to make life fantastic for myself, my kids and now my girlfriend and her daughter.

Append "with Patrick Stewart" to the end of all your resolutions: Then you can blame him for not showing and thus making it impossible for you to succeed. That jerk.

1) Start working in schools to get experience for Teacher's College.
2) Finish writing a novel.
3) Meet a girl? One that I'm with longer than a month?

But I'm not sure whats so unusual about that.

Eat less junk food.

Learn new, healthier recipies.

Excercise more regularly.

Learn to make a decent smoothie.

Tell my brother to stop being such a dingus.

Enjoy the year of Turku being the Culture Capital of Europe, yay.

Move to a new home.

NR, here's my smoothie recipe:

-Juice from 2 oranges (or 1 very big)
- about 1/3 cup coconut water or plain skim milk
-handful of blueberries
-handful of sliced strawberries
-1/2 banana
-1 tbs wheat germ

Blend and enjoy. :)

I have the generic weight loss resolution. After losing 50 lbs from June to November, I've slacked off and put 5 back on since November. My body doesn't want to exercise and I've been eating junk and enjoying it. My wife, on the other hand, keeps slimming down. Good for her.

My other resolution is to actually record this EP and actually stretch it into an LP. Yes, a good portion of it depends on the availability of my friend, but I think that I write good, if not simple, music. I want to be able to put something out that represents that. I'd love to resolve to start a band, but the people I want to play with are already in a band.

Fiance and I are going to have more date-nights! 2 years ago we did every other Friday date night for 2-3 months and didn't do much together this year.

I'm going to start working out more than once a month! Maybe... "Working out" meant WiiFit and a couple sit-ups here and there. Now I have Kinect's Your Shape Fitness Evolved to play with and it's 10x better. Hopefully I'll do it for more than 2-3 weeks at a time with 4-5 months in between! :)

Cleaner home! We moved into our condo in April and our room has been a cluttered mess the whole time. >.> Started clean-up today and hoping to keep going until it's actually clean and keep it that way! We're able to keep the rest of the place clean, even with our 2 friends living with us, but it's just our room that's ridiculous.

Aaaand finish more games. I have a bad habit of starting 20 games, getting maybe halfway through and finishing only 2.

My only unusual objectives for 2011 are to either expand or contract my belief systems, because it's getting stale, and to narrow down or widen my choices for the future, because there must be more options.

#23

My slightly unusual resolution is to gain weight, 10 kg acquired and maintained by the end of 2011. I made a similar resolution last New Year, and managed to reach my target weight only after three days of stuffing myself full of Christmas foods.

Quitting smoking also sounds good, and might fit in well with the resolution above. With the proposed increase in taxes they're talking about over here, I might soon not be able to afford both food and cigarrettes, anyway.

I'd really like to get off my ass & finish writing a whole novel. I usually get 4-5 chapters in and then lose all interest in continuing. It doesn't help that I'm easily distracted and can access porn games 24 hours a day.

Do y'all outline that shit, mang? 'Tis the only way to travel.

I do feel ya, though. In addition to reading more (read about 29 books this year), I plan to quit fuckin' around on the Internet as much and finish the current novel and two screeplays I'm working on. I'd also like to take full advantage of the camera I bought last year to film some live action skits. I've got scripts and ideas coming out of my bunghole; it's time I did something with them.

Oh, yeah, if that's the case then no wonder it's difficult. You need a cheering squad. Start writing your story in the media forum. Just add a few hundred words whenever you get the chance, and we'll bug you to give us more. Even though it'll be difficult since you won't have long uninterrupted periods to write for, I suspect the extra support may help you get past that.

Then you withhold the last chapter, and force everyone that got hooked on your novel to buy it on lulu.

Lose weight, re-enlist in the Corps, spend more date-nights with my wife and do something STELLAR for my daughter's first birthday, so that she can look back in photos and say "WTF Dad, I couldn't even REMEMBER that - why did you bother?" "Because it makes your Mom happy, and when Mom's happy, Dad's happy." "Eeeew!"

I never bother making any New Years resolutions. To me they are stupid waste of time that people don;t really plan on keeping. If someone really wanted to make a positive change to their life they should start it right than and there. They shouldn't wait for some arbitrary date to change on the calender. The only reason most people wait till New Years is because they don't want to change that aspect of their life cause it will require change on their part. Postponing it for a later date makes them feel better cause they are "planning" on making positive changes to their life but sadly since they don't want to really do the work the resolutions almost never last.

#44

TheBrew

Be in a band; been slowly putting something together this last month, but we need to actually finish some songs and play a show just see how it all works.

#45

True, but an arbitrary date on the calendar can be the catalyst that gets someone thinking about where they are, what they accomplished last year, and what they would like to accomplish this year. If you completely remove this yearly delineation, many people won't reflect on their recent accomplishments, and review their goals.

"New year's resolutions" are merely a simplistic way to think of goal setting and future planning. Simple enough to comment on in conversation, and for most people to perform without the complexities of really sitting down and going through the whole process of writing down one's ambitions, setting goals to move them towards their ambitions, setting objective mini-goals that will help them complete their goals, etc.

In other words, I think it's better than nothing. However, there are certainly far better ways of doing this than simple "new year's resolutions."

#46

Jiarn

I simply use my New Year's Reslolutions as a "set date" to reach goals that I set for myself. As well as continue "good things" I'm already doing.

heh. It is all the Steam sales :) I usually buy games I have been "looking" for a while but didn't want to buy it yet. When it is like 75% off or something like that, I go "I might as well since I was interested in it and maybe play later"

yea..... much later I still have at LEAST 90% of the games I bought haven't played yet (but loaded on my hdd)

Once I get down to a safe weight to do strenuous activities (i.e. so it won't kill my knees/calves/ankles), my resolution is to take up a unique physical activity that isn't exercise for the sake of exercise. Inspired by Calleja and his declaration that necro thread is best thread, I now say to this thread, WIIISE FWOM YOUH GWAAAVE...

I read this Cracked article and number 1 has been mildly inspiring. For 2013 I shall resolve to find something to become good at. I will let you guys know what I'll become good at when I figure it out. Which should be around 2014 or so.

#61

Calleja

I'd like suggestions on what to become good at, actually. I'm making a living translating stuff and I'm honestly really good at it but... I fucking hate it. With a passion. But sometimes I feel it's kinda too late to acquire another skill. Even if it's not to make a living, even. Just... a hobby that isn't reading/playing/watching stuff someone else makes.

Maybe my resolution should be to start writing again.

1. Less smoking weed. It's taking over too much of my time.
2. More reading new books. I've been able to find some time to read lately, but I've spent it all rereading old favourites. They're still great, but I've got dozens of unread books which I suspect are good as well....Just haven't gotten around to them, as I feel more secure with books I know.
3. NOT be in the same job I'm in right now at the end of the year. Considering this has been a NY resolution three years running, I really ought to do something about it.
4. Be more up to date with my paperwork and administration around the house. I eventually get everything sort of right, but I lose money in some places simply by not paying in time or by not realising I need to send in that voucher before the Xth, or copy this coupon, or whatever. Being more on the ball and keeping a closer watch ould make me less stressed and save me money.
5. Manage to hang on to my girlfriend, as she's way better than I deserve.
6. After 3., if I have steadier hours, and looking towards 5., get some therapy already - I know I could use it but I've been stalling for too long with my irregular working hours as an excuse.

I've resolved to actually stick with a foreign language to try to gain fluency in and I'm going with German because it's the closest I am to finishing. To help achieve this, I've switched Steam to German and will immerse myself in German-language media. Doing this immediately rather than waiting for the new year.

In other news, Steam really does not seem to like having its language changed. All of my games seem to be redownloading from scratch; I had figured it would only need to replace audio/text files or something.
