Wanting to game.

Are there any online D&D games up and running and what days do you run them? I'm itching to game. My current gaming group is not meeting my expectations. All the other players want to do nothing but compete over who has the better character, and our DMs do nothing but try to show us how much smarter all his NPCs are than us.
I need just a chance to sit down and enjoy a nice role playing game.

I know Dave's is going, but it seems pretty full at the moment, cycling between 6 and 7 characters on lvl 2.

Me and the gal would be up for one though, if there was a DM.

I've just about got everything done to start running my campaign, but I've run into a snag. I've just recently applied for a part time job and don't know what hours I'll be working if I get it.

http://heavensgate.wikidot.com

That's the website and map for the campaign setting. Ignore the race and class section. Those are for something I'm just tinkering around with and using later.

I can't speak for Shawnacy or my fiance, but I didn't post in your thread before because it seemed kind of restrictive and I'd like to do something straightforward. Something I can pick up a race, class, and a background, and just dive in without memorizing a world right off the bat.

That's the way I'd DM it: Create what you want and start y'all in some little town in Generica. hmm . . . if I ever do DM again, that's definitely gonna be the name of the town, region or whatever: Generica.

And I would be willing to DM if the players do the work of forming and organizing the gaming group.

I'm in Dave's game, but I'd be happy to play in another game.

So if Shawnacy is one, I'm a 2nd, and I think Mikal (The blue puppet avatar person?) wanted to play, so that'd be 3 right there.

If we could get 1 or 2 more we could set up a game right?

If you wanna start an official thread, Gruebeard, I can help round up some players.

It's restrictive in race only. Humans, dwarves, and eladrin. I'm tired of running games where everyone has to be able to be everything and anything, just because it's in the book. The campaign setting is written so that humans will be the primary race in the group. The other two races are rarely seen outside their own lands.

Being "human" is only restrictive if you just look at stats and abilities. Besides, having some conformity to the group makes it much easier to create plausible reasons for the adventuring group to be working together. I mean for reasons other than loot and coin and fate, which are trite and cliched.

The 13th Warrior is a perfect example of the type of game I prefer to run. You had 12 "humans" and 1 "non-human", aka, 12 Europeans and 1 Arab, which is by no means a slight on Arabs. It's just a way to show the D&D analogy. The twelve warriors that already knew each other, spoke each others language and knew the customs had a reason to adventure together outside of money and power. The 13th warrior, the Arab, was chosen by fate.

Even though they were all "human", they were all very different. There are twelve different kingdoms to choose from in my campaign setting, plus a number of clans (Tengoku humans) and the desert nomads from Drahkmar. There's plenty of differences there to make your character unique enough. That is, unless you think having a different racial ability is what makes you a unique flower.

That'd be 5 with escushion and his gal . . . although I'd be inclined to count them as one in a way since it's likely that if one of them can't make it the other one wouldn't either - although that's just a guess - so with all of you I'd think one more would be necessary, considering how it's been in Dave's game with seemingly 2 people absent each session.

I'm gonna wait until I'm not stealing my neighbour's internet before I commit to anything, though.

*hopes his tech support was right*

Well, if you decide you wanna/can do it, lemme know! I'll definitely join, and if you start an official thread it'll be easy enough to find people.

Yeah, get one more, just 'cause you never know.

So, what we do about getting organized? I guess we can use the same websites as the other game, though we'll have to find another voice chat server. Probably most important is figuring out when everyone wants to play. Weekends are preferred for me, as I don't get home from work and settled until around 7 or so usually and can't stay up too late due to work the next morning. (So Friday evening would count as okay.)

Well once Gruebeard decides he absolutely wants to do it, we'll create an official thread, get all the people, and make a list of all the times that we can play. We'll match up the free times if possible and play.

Then we'll go from there!

It would have to be Friday night.

I'm busy pretty much every Saturday and I've got Dave's game on Sundays . . . even Friday may not work out that well as I may be going back to swinging between days & afternoons 3 weeks from now.

Bah! I'm gonna have to say dammit, I can't make it work. :tear:

Ah, too bad.

I'm not really interested in Brigand's thing personally.
My gal has DMed several times before, but I'd rather someone else do it if possible.

:eyeroll:

Fine whatever. I don't want to DM for people that are so set in their ways to never step out of their "by the book" boundaries anyway.

Well the whole point of D&D is to progress and feel like you're becoming more powerful. If we had to change out all the time, at most having a character level 3, you'd just feel like a limited weakling all the time, fighting goblins and low-level things.

While it sounds "interesting," I wouldn't do it simply because Dave's game is the only D&D I've ever played, and we're not even level 3 yet. I'm so looking forward to being an all-powerful wizard that I can't imagine constantly starting new characters over and over.

You misunderstood what I meant by opening up a character slot...

You start with one character slot. This slot is filled when you create your first character. When that character reaches 2nd level, you gain a second character slot. You don't have to create a new character if you don't want to. It's there so you can have different characters to play in different regions.

When one of your two characters reaches third level, that opens a third character slot so you can have a third character to play if you want. This gives you a stable of three characters to choose from when a game is posted. Characters aren't retired until 10th level anyway and there will be special "epic" adventures written specifically for 10th lvl and higher characters.

Ohhhhh..

Okay.

Well, uhh.. Hm, screw it- if we can get people I'll play. I'm going to have a lot of free time now that school's out and 5 hours every sunday just isn't feedin' the addiction.

Guess I'll post in your "official thread".

I've been lurking this forum for a while. I'd be into gaming too. I know absolutely nothing about how these games work but I would love to learn. I'm also living in china at the moment. If anyone here is patient enough to show me the ropes I'd be most grateful.

First thing we need to know exactly what your hours of availability are. You need at least 3-5 hours free.

I don't have any work obligations at the moment so I'm free all day everyday.

It's just a matter of making it work with the timezones.

I don't think it would be particularly helpful if I told what times I was available in the china timezone. I think I could start between 6:00 and 7:00 PM (EDT) and play for as long as it takes from there.

There's a twelve hour difference between EDT and Chinese time so if any western hemisphere folks want to game in the mornings I could also play then between say 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM EDT.

I'm coming back to the Pacific Time Zone in about a month and will have a lot of spare time so if don't fit into any of the existing schedules now I might then.
