Watch Blu-Ray movies on your.... Xbox 360?

More than a year after Sony declared victory in the format war, it appears that Microsoft is officially embracing Blu-ray, to an extent. In an interview with Gizmodo, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed that the Xbox 360 will eventually be received a Blu-ray add-on drive. The confirmation came when Ballmer was asked whether the Xbox 360 would be getting a Blu-ray drive anytime soon. He replied, \"Well I don't know if we need to put Blu-ray in there - you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories.\"
As Gizmodo points out, it's possible that Microsoft is merely pointing out that any Xbox 360 Blu-ray drive would have to be external, and that it's not an actual confirmation. For its part, Xbox 360 representatives are keeping their cards pretty close to their chest, saying that they're not ready to comment on future plans.
Microsoft has repeatedly denied plans for a Blu-ray player since the format war came to an end last year. Director of product management Aaron Greenberg issued the most recent denial, saying that Microsoft believes that the future is digital, and that they won't \"force people to pay for things they don't want.\"
With no official details, we can only assume that Microsoft is waiting until CES to make an official announcement.

So, basically, what they're saying is, "Sure, you can play Blu-Ray movies, but that's going to cost you another $150 bucks, which makes us a more expensive system than a PS3. So, you know. Buy a PS3. Unless you REALLY like Halo games."

Or being able to communicate with people when you play games online

Or having to turn in your system for repairs routinely because the company that makes it decided it would be cheaper to replace them until the warranty runs out than FIX THE FUCKING DESIGN.

LAughs I'm still laughing over this. They're only doing to boost sales of a defective system. What would kick ass if the Wii did it instead.

Microsoft's 360 can go fuck itself

LOL, Somebody sounds a little bitter :p The problem there, though, is that even though the 360 has a failure rate of over 50%, it's still a superior system. When they break, most people people either gripe and get them fixed or go and buy new ones.

Getting back on topic, what it comes down to for me, is that I didn't buy any Blu-ray movies when I owned a PS3. I was tempted, but they never seemed worth the price. I'm happy to stick with DVDs.

Just out of curiosity, why is it a better system?

It's very much a matter of opinion, but for me, it's better console exclusives, better online play, cheaper, and more often than not when a game is released on both consoles, the 360 version is less glitchy and/or looks better. I'm told that as developers get more of a handle with the PS3, the last point becomes less of an issue, but it's still there.

Couple that with the fact that when people's xboxes die, the majority are buying new ones instead of PS3s, and I think I've justified myself.

And now Microsoft is saying that the 360 will never get Blu-Ray and that Balmer was talking about Windows getting Blu-Ray.... uh-huh, sure.

That's the worst justification ever... they buy new xboxes coz they're xbots, just like the people that buy new ps3's are likely ps fanboys (hmm, i don't remember if there was any equivalent to xbots for them).

Just stick with the "moar gamez" thing.

... a better explanation would be that they already have a large library of games for their Xbox360s and don't want to trade them all in for less than a tenth of what they paid for them.

How is that not covered in what i said?!

I share the opinion of holding off on BluRay till I get a better television, which is a long, long way off. Still, if they do sell it on the Xbox as a costly addon, I am definitely going to make the choice of getting a PS3 instead.

I didn't say that was the sole justifcation, it was part of the whole. People are presented with the opportunity to buy another console when the xbox dies, but they buy another xbox, with a greater than 50% failure rate. Some of it's loyal fanboyism, but after a burn of $300, with a 50+% chance of another $300 burn, why would any consumer of sound mind do such a thing, if there were something comparable on the market? As for the games/peripherals you already own? If the trade in value is so low, it usually means lots of people are trading it in, which means you can buy it for cheap on the PS3. Small price to pay for the peace of mind of your console having a less than 10% failure rate, plus you get a blu-ray player, a built in wifi adapter and free online play. So why, may I ask, are people not switching over?

Also, Blu-ray players are cheaper than consoles now, aren't they? If not all consoles, at least PS3s. By the time MS gets around to launching a blu-ray player peripheral (if they do) You'd be able to get a full fledged player for cheaper anyway.

Because droves of retards play Halo.

I own a Xbox360. I do miss the lack of Blu-Ray.

If it raised the price of the Xbox360 by $100, I still would have bought the Xbox360.

If only because Xbox Live is a more reliable and more widely played online gaming arena.

Well, that makes droves of retards the majority then, doesn't it?

Also, of all of the people I know that have had their Xboxes die and got new ones, most of them don't even like halo.

No, the majority of video game players buy Wii's, does that make Wii superior?

Depends on the definition of superior. If "having what everybody wants" qualifies, then yes, it does. The question is this, is the smartest, the strongest, or the most charismatic person superior?

No, not really when he barely works.

I don't care how awesome the guy is, when I need a job done and I have to wait three weeks or hire another guy exactly the same as him and pay both of them, they are not superior.

Too bad the guy who slacks off all the time belongs to a much better union, so he gets the better contracts. *sigh*

My union (well, it's not a union, more like our management brass, we don't actually have a union) is trying to make striking legal for law enforcement....can you fucking imagine that? It's fucking Old Detroit Robocop shit.

Why the fuck would they do that? Is crime really so bad in Canada that you guys need to beat the shit out of people to get compliance? I could see it happening here in the US, but not Canada.
