Well, the stories of Netflix streaming coming to a new device were true: today Sony and Netflix made it official that Netflix is coming to PS3.

The service will arrive on the Sony console next month and will be free to PS3 owners who already subscribe to the service (or $8.99 a month for those who don't) -- and unlike on the Xbox 360, people will not be required to pay the equivalent of the yearly $50 Xbox Live Gold membership to access it.
Initially, PS3 owners will access the on-demand Netflix content via a free instant streaming blu-ray disc (people can already sign up to receive the disc as soon as it's available). It's assumed that later a Netflix application that resides within the PS3's XMB will become available -- though how closely this mirrors the one on Xbox 360 remains to be seen, as Microsoft had a large hand in producing that application.
We'll report more details on this deal as they become available.

So I won't have to register a ps3 as a device? That would be good, as I could just bring the disc over to my friends house and not have to register his ps3.

I really tempted to let my Xbox Live Gold membership run out now. I don't know if I actually will but it is more tempting.

Definitely getting my PS3 now once I get a my TV upgraded next year. This is awesomesauce.

But for another $50 a year. :p

I'm down for this and just another reason why I can't wait to get my PS3 for Christmas.

Though, maybe someone can answer this for me: does a PS3 have a USB port? For example, the use of a USB storage stick? In case of, say, "legally obtaining" Doctor Who and wanting to watch it on a TV instead of computer?

yes, you can also use an external hdd as long as its formatted FAT32. Also you can set up network shares with the ps3 and just stream your "legally obtained" files over the network

Just wanted to emphasize this. The PS3 works beautifully with shared files on your computer. All you need to do is authorize your PS3 for file sharing on your computer and you can share via the wireless on the PS3.

Obviously protected content, such as iTunes videos and music will not work due to restrictions, but if someone were to somehow jailbreak that content one could conceivably view that content on the PS3.

Oooo, streaming Blu-Ray?

Might be getting that PS3 sooner than expected.... :uhhuh:
It's not streaming Blu-Ray, there's no way they've got that kind of bandwidth for the service. It's a Blu-Ray disc you put in your PS3 that uses the BDLive feature of Blu-Ray to stream Neflix video. It's probably going to be the exact same resolution as on the Xbox 360.

Yeah, wanting the slick streaming kept us from getting it but now... no reason not too. I'm excited.

They will have to have some way of tracking what Netflix user is using what disc. Cause if not someone could have their disc stolen and some stranger could be streaming all the Netflix they wanted for free. So they will obviously have some way to keep track of it. Now whether that involves signing into your account each time or actually registering your system i don't know. But I can't imagine the disc being used for very long. I see them making it a download for the system like the 360 does.

Oh and apparently Microsoft is full of idiots.

Microsoft Responds To PS3 Netflix Announcement

Will they be dropping the Xbox Live Gold membership requirement for Netflix?

by Jim Reilly

October 26, 2009 - The announcement that video streaming service Netflix would be headed to PlayStation 3 next month left many wondering if Microsoft would respond by dropping the Xbox Live Gold membership requirement to use the service on the Xbox 360.

That answer, as of today, is no.

A company spokesperson reiterated to IGN the value of Xbox Live Gold status, saying its online experience is still \"a generation ahead of the competition\" despite a yearly subscription cost.

\"The Netflix experience on Xbox LIVE is unique and reflects our commitment for social entertainment. We believe we offer an experience today that is a generation ahead of what others are offering,\" the spokesperson said. \"For a little over $4 a month Xbox LIVE Gold membership is hands-down the best value in home entertainment, and gives you exclusive access multi-player gaming and early demos as well as Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, Last.fm, \"1 vs 100\" and more.\"

Unlike Xbox Live members, PlayStation 3 owners will not have to pay an additional charge outside of the monthly Netflix subscriber fee of $8.99.

Will you be moving your Netflix service to PlayStation 3? Or continue to remain on Xbox 360?
All Microsoft can talk about is how much better Xbox Live is to the Playstation Network . Now I will give them that at the moment XBL is better but the PSN is quickly making strides to get better and it's free. They think since their online service is so much better that we should have to pay to stream Netflix movies on it? What does their service have to do with it? It's not like they designed some huge features just for XBL. They are just continuing to try and find ways to force people to use XBL.

I really never saw what was so much better about XBL over PSN to merit a monthly fee. I have no problems with online gaming other than the fact that there are fewer people out there with PS3s, but that appears to be changing quite quickly.

I really think that the PS3 is hitting it's stride. Late in the game, yes, but hitting it none the less.

Course, had Microsoft held off on their release, they could have possibly lowered their fail rate to somewhere below 50%. They're starting to lose their major advantage of being the first next gen console.

And yes, there are quite a few more tards out on the XBL that I'm glad I don't have to deal with on the PSN.

Now if they just cut a deal with Hulu, I'll be exstatic.
TVersity lets you do that for free, at least for now. Works with both the 360 and the PS3. Quality isn't great, as of yet, but hey, it's free.

I actually occasionally use my XBL Gold membership, so w/e, but good for Sony for keeping it competitive.

I like the fact that everyone on XBL has a headset. Sure people can be annoying sometimes, but at least I know that playing a team game, my team can communicate.

If it required jailbreaking my PS3, I'll pass.

I love all the access XBLG gives me, demos, events, videos, as well as Netflix. Granted, I'm not very versed in PSN.
FYI, PSN gives you all of that as well, along with being free.[/QUOTE]

Live gold gives access to things that silver/psn do not.

I don't think you can jailbreak a PS3 at the moment. I think the architecture puts a damper on that. I know that when I owned one, you weren't able to.

What exactly? I use the PSN network to download games, demo's, videos, movies, tv shows, themes, add on content and do live play. What else does Gold give that goes above and beyond making it worth the cash?

It does not require jailbreaking at all, it just sets up a media server (like Windows media server) on your PC and streams it through your console to your TV.

You can also use it to watch other videos you have, dependent on how they're encoded (and how good your PC is).

Actually I don't have a real use for it. I have my PC hooked up to both my monitor and my widescreen TV, but thanks for the suggestion.

It would be nice to just fire up the PS3 independant of the computer and watch Hulu.
