Green Man Gaming Attempts to Monetize the Digital Pre-Owned Games Market

A new concept for cracking the pre-owned digital games market comes from a new London-based company.

Once you've paid for a digital downloadable game, you're out of pocket for good, right? Not according to Green Man Gaming. The London-based outfit is bringing to market a new concept which allows gamers to trade-in their previously played digital games for credit. Sounds crazy? Read on...

Gian Luzio, COO for Green Man Gaming says, \"Previously the minute you had paid and downloaded your game it had no resale value. This is extremely expensive for the gamer and does not encourage the consumer to try new genres or franchises. Our leading edge technology gives downloaded games a value that gamers can trade-in at any time.\"

Green Man Gaming will ensure that the publishing community receives substantial remuneration from the digital pre-owned market. \"We will pay significant royalties to the publisher each time the game is traded in perpetuity.\" commented Luzio.
Luzio goes on to write that the company is set to launch with 400 titles by the end of Q1 2010 and will have over 2000 games available by the end of this year.
Solves the problem of re-selling games on both sides...

huh...... So a company will sell digital download game similar to steam and D2D system BUT allow users to resell back to the vendor? interesting I wonder how they track it? using keys?

Online validation via the platform probably, making sure you have the license keys to play the games you have installed, and you'll only be able to play them through their platform. With the added turn-in value of games you don't want anymore, that could work quite well.

This could work, provided enough people jump on the bandwagon.

Personally, I'm considering it, even though I prefer having a physical copy of a game. I'm kinda sick of Gamestop's bullshit policies.

I hope this works, if only so Valve will copy the idea when it takes off. However, it makes me wonder just how much a digital game will be worth in trade in... and if I can get that back as only credit or if they'll give me cash.
