Honestly? Not half bad. In fact it's really good. It's clean and simple, which I like. I immediately "got" what kind of site I was visiting. The only "negative" thing would be that it needs a little color in my opinion, it's a "fun" site, the dark color scheme is a little more suited for something more serious.

I see what you mean when you wanted a simple look, it's clean and uncluttered, I like that.
Might I suggest a short blurb at the top, or in the page title, just a brief description of what the site is meant to be? Sort of like, "Wut Is This: The Zaniest Corners of the Internet, Right Here!" But better than that, obviously. I mention this because I had to spend a few seconds trying to figure out what I'm looking at before I figured out the purpose of the site.

^ This. I like the site, but a description would be a good addition.

I dunno. I think it's pretty obvious, and is better left unsaid.
But if it's going to compete with other sites like that it'll need to refine its niche. Ie: post often, at least a few times every day, That assumes of course that this isn't just a hobby.

If he's trying to make it the next lolcats and earn $$$ it makes sense doesn't it?

Wouldn't it be easier to just get a Tumblr If the intent is just to post random stuff?
Tumblr specializes in easy set up sites for people who like linking to stuff, post images/videos they've found on the web but don't want a full blown blog. Just adding a comment to each entry (or not).
Tumblr lets you effortlessly share anything. Post text, photos, quotes, links, music, and videos, from your browser, phone, desktop, email, or wherever you happen to be. You can customize everything, from colors, to your theme's HTML.
