Why have I not set up OpenDNS before?

Because it is amazing. Not only does it allow me to block unsavory sites, but it has given me a substantial speed boost.

Should've posted this on the Gentoo forums. They, at least, would appreciate this.

They have their own page with instructions.

I used to use them, but they have difficulties with YouTube videos loading properly (or any other heavily-redirected stuff).

You know Google just announced Google Public DNS 2 days ago?

ALSO, nice to see another Gentoo user around.

I have trouble with putting all of my digital eggs in one Google basket.

Google also just released a (beta) tool for benchmarking which DNS is fastest for you.

Check it out. I just found out about it today.

Google's Public DNS actually seems significantly slower than Bellsouth's actually. So does OpenDNS for that matter. I see "Looking up" messages in my status bar I never really noticed through Bellsouth (AT&T). And I just cleared my cache, too. I'm going to run that namebench program and see what it tells me.

The malware/phishing filters alone are worth it.
