Would you help colonize the solar system?

#1

Alucard

Let's pose a hypothetical question to all you forumites out here on this esteemed forum.

Let's say the technology was all worked out and we could colonize planets in our solar system
looking for valuable minerals and establishing new footholds both in the inner and outer planets.

Would you be part in that colonization effort or would you stay on good ol terra firma.

If I had a skill they'd think useable enough to stick me somewhere else, sure, why not? Don't think I have enough pioneering/scientific chops to make it, but if I could, sure.

I don't think there's much of a chance that I wouldn't want to do it. Getting off this one mudball would be quite fulfilling. I think I'd probably have something to contribute (I guess they'd need people with math-computer knowledge and that don't mind being shot at another planet in a giant bullet).

I would do it in a heart beat.

Allen, who is Quiet

I would do it and then have buyer's remorse

I don't think I'd have much to add and I feel pretty attached to Earth.

Laurelai

Between my other half and I (me the paramedic, he the software/electrical engineer) we'd likely make a pretty good package deal. However fascinating the idea terraformation is to me though, I could not leave my terran sunsets, my ocean, my bees, my hibiscus, my smell of rain etc etc etc.

If it was like the old days of pioneering, sure.

But the way things are now, eh. It'd just be like building a city.

I'd miss Earth and my family too much. If it was a 2 year mission, that might be cool. That, and a really, really big paycheck!
A Microbiologist could be of some use.

Why colonize just planets indeed, lets go L5!

BTW yes.

If my important people came with me, then hell yes! If they couldn't come? Then I'll just be up for a visit thanks.

In all honesty, I probably wouldn't qualify. I'm overweight, slightly claustrophobic... and I teach English as a foreign language ;) So I don't think they would let me tag along even if I wanted to.

Why L5? L2 has always looked most interesting to me.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes.

Aisaku

To quote my favorite alien:

"I gave them the wrong warning. I should've told them to run, as fast as they can, run and hide, because the monsters are coming. The human race."

And no that has nothing to do with the fact that such a mission would have no use for a geek who draws pictures. :humph:

Depends. Am I living in a tiny can or is it a biodome or a terraformed planet (or moon)? I'd go if it was a sizeable enough complex, with at least a park and sufficient technology for entertainment and safety.

Indeed.

#30

Wyrminarrd

I doubt that I would be interested in living in some bio-dome on Mars or one of the moons of Jupiter so I would almost certainly stay on Earth. I would however love to visit those places

Rob King

Rob King

All things told, I'd love to go, provided it wasn't a permanent move. There's so much on Earth I want to see. Seeing Mars would be awesome, but there's not enough variety there to make me want to spend my life.

The thing that hits me most about the romance of being an explorer is the anthropological angle. Seeing other, new to you cultures. It is quite unlikely that I would get that, picking through the rocks of Mars.

Only if I get to be a Belter.

WolfOfOdin

Yes. Yes I would.

I would then stage a revolt against earth and create the Martian Nation, proceeding to use de-commissioned space ships as weapons to launch at my enemies.

HAIL WOLF! FIRST EMPEROR OF MARS!

That's implying you'd survive the space trip aboard my vessel. I don't much like mutiny during her mutiny.

Shego, I plan to have placed my brain into a mechanical body by this time, giving your mutiny an edge in having a nigh-unkillable infiltrator, as well as leaving the women-folk to you. Alliance?

But really, I think I would be very interested if I didn't have a family here. The idea of doing something that huge would be very hard to pass up.

I'd stay here on Earth. I'd rather colonize the oceans instead of a new planet. Pretty fishies!

I'd help out if one of our colonies got attacked by an alien life form but other than that, I'd stay home.

I'd still hate being in a spaceship, I played far too many video games such as Dead Space and System Shock to know that.....

#42

WolfOfOdin

I hereby announce the joint revolution of Wolf's cyborg collective and Shego's army. All of space shall burn!

#43

B

Fuck yeah I'd go. I'd drift out amongst the endless black between the asteroids, sending unmanned packages of ore off to lunar orbits for pick up by haulers to the orbital smelters and refineries.

Damn cyborgs killed mah dog! Now off to save the human race!

*activates the over-weaponized, cool-looking starfighter, the FSS Pantsless*

Now all I need is an eyepatch, a somewhat simple bruiser/shooter, a sexy female mechanic and a pragmatic second-in-command...

Man the tactical, Mr Allen. We've got three of Shego's HoBot Emasculator-class fighters on the sensor grid.

Of course i'll help... by sending out my clones... which will then enact Order 66, leaving me sole ruler of the Sol system... at least until the inevitable betrayal by a clone who's mental conditioning has been broken by accident.

These are designed to be anti-vaguely-phallic weapons. Our missiles and cannons are useless. I would recommend using the Sexy Beam to overload their pre-programmed sensibilities.

Of course, if you're seeing one HoBot, there are probably a lot more you're not seeing.

Frak! Deploy the decoy - the buoy that sends an emergency signal from a transport ship filled with Catholic school girls!

All the while my Cyborg Locusts feast upon your ship's hull.

"I do not think so.... General...."

*for a moment, her eyes glow that familiar green that the General finds unmistakable*

"Did you really think you'd survive this?" she says as one arm becomes a small cannon like appendage and the other changes into multiple wired tentacles.

*she holds the cannon towards the General as her other appendages penetrate the CPU near the EMP, her laughter filling the bridge*

I find what the locusts are about to do much more interesting than some invasive tentacles. Besides, my bots don't swing that way. :heythere:

I put on my wizard robe and my magical laser sword, slicing the robots in half while conjuring invisible force fields to cover our defensive!

Locusts, enable electro-absorption cells, gorge and use the energy to burn through the hull. Once through, MERGE TO FORM DEVASTATOR...er...dammit again, FEAST ON THE WEAK FULL-FLESHED WITHIN!

*weak sound on the comms*

Help... Help... This is the transport vessel Bridget. We are dead in space, our engines are dead... Please help us, we only have oxygen for five more hours, and the headmistress of St Whipabum's School for Wayward Girls will not be happy if we cannot get these two-hundred sixteen-year-olds to Mars in time...
