Okay, we've been able to surf for quite some time now with sub boards and we surfed for a long time with no sub boards. XenForo 1.1 will once again introduce us to thread prefixes. These prefixes can be sorted, searched and (hopefully) can be excluded from "What's New". This has not been confirmed yet, but it was talked about. This means that we could have a prefix of [Thread Game] and it wouldn't show in the "What's New" but would still show in the sub board list.

There are several boards which have no subs and use all prefixes (Fark, Forumopolis), but the majority use sub boards to one degree or another. No matter what I'll probably still have some level of sub board, but do we want to remove and combine subs in the Topics section? Let me know how you feel.

Sub Boards

Benefits
  1. Able to easily categorize threads and keep things organized.
  2. Will be able to exclude sub boards from "What's New".
Detriments
  1. Restrictive categorization due to space constraints or to prevent confusion.
  2. Less popular sub boards tend to look like barren wastelands and people don't go there.

Prefixes

Benefits
  1. Easy to search/sort by topic/interest.
  2. Topics in one area may gain traction where it normally wouldn't because they'd be seen and not buried in a sub board.
Detriments
  1. It would take a lot of work to prefix existing threads.
  2. A lot of threads in one general area might be overwhelming for new users.
What do you guys want to do?

I love the sub boards as is. I have no preference about the prefixes but I wouldn't want to lose the individual boards.

I'm too accustomed to the subboards to want to change them now. It's not broken, so there's no need to fix it.

The prefixes thing would be interesting though, and the ability to filter out certain types of threads would probably be quite welcome for more than a few of us.

I hate to be unhelpful, but I really don't have a strong opinion leaning one way or the other. I wouldn't mind if it stayed the same, but none of the new options would really bother me either.

Okay, so new question. What prefixes would you like to see? Keep in mind that we're going to need to go back through a lot of threads to prefix them.

Sub-Board but I'm guessing we're going to add a "+1 post" count game threads to it's own subforum (That will be blocked from new threads feed) and if anyone posts them in General we'll just report them mis-placed and they'll be moved?

What's a prefix?
[Comic] Hey, check out this comic!
[TV] I love this new show!
[Music] Dubstep rules. Listen to this.
[NSFW] Boobies!

etc. The [Brackets] are thread prefixes that we can use to sort and categorize thread content.

Well, if we can eliminate prefixes from the "What's New" we won't need that sub board as we'd have one called [Thread Game] or [Neverending Thread].

I voted for fewer sub-boards with the addition of prefixes. It might be nice to simplify a little bit if you are going to add some complexity.
