Well, I was either expecting Yahtzee to go the "fucking awesome" Painkiller route or shit all over the game.

Can't say I'm surprised by the latter.

The game has been getting a lukewarm reception by the review community. Most of them have the same complaints as Yahtzee

Having heard all this it makes me think that Brütal Legend isn't a game, but rather an interactive painting. (Or cd-cover as the case may be)

Yahtzee made me chuckle, though.

This game looks awful. Every time I see a commercial for it I want to punch a kitten.

The game is hilarious, especially if you're into metal at all. The gameplay that isn't the RTS segments is generally mediocre at best and the RTS segments are terrible. Just terrible.

I actually pretty much agree with Yahtzee.

So it's a good console game then...

Given his already impressive library of awsome games, such as Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, Psychonauts, etc... I think I can more than forgive 1 mediocre game out of the whole bunch from Mr Schaefer.

I would kill for another Full Throttle, Grim Fandango and Psychonauts.

Yes, kill. I would kill faster than Shego.

Not possible, but good imagery to be sure. :slywink:

...we agree again. I think there might be a trend here.

It seems the majority of his beloved work is adventure games. I'd venture a guess that this is because good writing can be what makes or breaks an adventure game game, whereas when you have something like brutal legend, the gameplay can seriously interfere with it.

It almost appears like he has this wonderful, thoughtful, creative mind that's great for writing and imagery, but not so great for solid gameplay. While Psychonauts was definitley awesome, there were a few areas that attested to this.

...
...
You know, after reading that, I think like 2/3 of all my posts on this board come off as way more negative than I had intended. Oh well, take what you will.

Brutal Legend is the most awesome game that I've ever not wanted to play.

It's weird... I love the style, humor, and writing of the game, and the world is a great idea, especially since I'm a metal fan. The soundtrack is great, and just driving around killing stuff with metal blaring out of the vehicle's radio is pretty nice.

But the meat of the game, the gameplay, is merely 'ok'. To the point that when I stop playing it, I don't really feel compelled to ever start again.

Sound like a challenge to me...

Tim Schaefer really needs to stop making games and start making CG movies or something. He'd be far more successful.

I agree. I haven't played the game after completing the campaign, which I'm happy took me a couple of days as I was also searching for the collectibles.

Good point--this would make a far better movie than a game.

If you combined Tim Schafer with Pixar, I think the universe would explode.

And it would be AWESOME.

Imagine a Grim Fandango Pixar-made movie? :D

See, THAT would be a great idea. It'll reach a wider audience than the game did, while still being able to keep some of the adult humor Pixar is famous for sticking into it's movies.

I think my brain is melting simply from the thought of that awesomeness. I don't know what it would do to my psyche if such epic were actually made.

My biggest issue with the game was it was too short. 10-ish hours over a couple days and it's 100% done, sidequests and all. Also, there's no real point to doing those quests once you beat it, as it's all weapon/ability rewards (if there's one at all).

The writing was great and I loved catching the cameos as I played. The animation style of the characters and facial expressions added a nice layer to the overall story.

I just wish there was more meat to the gameplay than drive/RTS/hit things.

I haven't finish it yet, but I love it. I got too many games to play now :(
