So I got an alert from the college I go to today. The people that hold my financial information for them have had their data stolen and guess what!?! I'm possibly part of that data! So I get a year free of insurance for identity theft.
It doesn't matter though, I get the last laugh, my credit is already shitty SO TAKE THAT YOU THIEVING BASTARDS!
edited for epic grammar fail.

See if you can wrangle actual protective measures, like credit monitoring, so you can find out before something bad goes through.
Failing that, a lot of places, including the three credit agencies offer a variety of services on a monthly basis. You can usually get something pretty comprehensive for like $20/month (or less if they have a deal). I know that might seem a lot, but it's a pittance compared to actual id theft.

Yeah I just put a fraud alert on my account so they have to contact me before anyone opens credit in my name (for the next 90 days). The people that lost my data are sending me a letter (I talked to them on the phone) and once I get this letter it has a code on it for a year free of id theft insurance. we'll see what happens from there

Hello, I am General Specific. I would like to make a withdrawal from my bank account, as well as the 60 dollar bill I retrieved from my bank account back when I was known as Crimsonsoul.

Reminds me of something funny from late last year. We had a "legal adviser" group come to advise the staff at our college about identity theft - not sharing certain details, and what not. Except for a few problems. We're a public institution, so a lot of the information they were saying "Don't share with anyone" must, by law, be available. Which they seemed to not know. They gave us a lot of pressure to sign our important information over to be safeguarded, and their answers to our questions were lackluster at best. Only a few people signed up.
The company name they gave us does not turn up on any search done for them.
