As long as they don't do this in the same way as Cloverfield, I can't wait to see this. I've always wanted to see the Kaiju battle movies hit over here in the US. Though, I do have to admit, I still have a soft spot for guys in rubber suits smashing models rather than CGI, but asking Hollywood to use practical effects of any kind over CGI is futile.
Yeah, assuming Del Toro isn't being hamstrung by the studio, and so far word seems to be he's being allowed to act like a kid in a candy shop, expect some really amazing visual effects, many of which will be practical.

The test video is brilliant. The bits of the gorilla whale you do see certainly look better than zilla did. Plus the bits in spoilers make it sound like we're going to get cool fight scenes. I'm hopeful, especially since we still have to wait another 2 years for Toho to bring the franchise back into production.

Nobody stores video on tape any longer, and digital signals don't have a problem with vertical hold, nevermind static.
If you are going to show these features of a supposedly unstable signal, please make sure you are using an old analog TV with a 4:3 aspect ratio, sitting on top of a VCR, with an obviously frayed video cable between the two, rather than a 16:9 HD digital image.

Yeah, and telephones (even landlines) don't go back to a dialtone when you hang them up, but it's an accepted cinema tool.
Also, broadcast video long ago abandoned the quadruplex system, which means those "blurry" frames should tear the entire frame, they should not have multiple horizontal tears within the same frame.

I have neither read WWZ nor am I particularly interested in the zombie genre as a whole, so the fact that it breaks from convention (or the stated lore from the book) doesn't particularly bother me. I also don't particularly care about the physical impossibility of the 'zombie wave' since it's not like reanimated, brain-eating corpses are all that close to reality.
I'd guess that for you, it breaks the reality of what is presented, the same way that the digital/analog mix-up makes stienman twitchy. I don't think the factor of improbability is what is important, it's the fact that it breaks immersion. For you, it's a dealbreaker; for me, it's just another ruleset I would accept as part of the presented world. For stienman, with his technical background, the tv thing is kinda bullshit; for Tress, it's just another visual cue. So like I said, different strokes for different folks.

Meh, I just think it's funny. As drifter points out, it's like anything else in the movie. The director has a vision and wants to evoke certain emotions in the viewer. Same reason they use shakey cam - when we're running our vision may indeed shake, but our eyes and brain work together to present a steady image to ourselves, so the shakey cam is definitely not realistic, and since there aren't physical cues for our brain to work off it can make people sick.
But it's the vision they want to present, evoking the emotions they want to evoke. Same thing with hacker screens, impossible car crashes and explosions, etc.

Except there's no cheese in that trailer at all. I will say the rocket punch is pretty damn cool but everything else is pretty serious-looking. Obviously the actual movie may incorporate more cheese.
As for the Transformers comparison, I see very little difference in the visibility of the robots; that last shot was no different than Transformers2 and Optimus being knocked across the highway.
