:( I understand. Besides, he is needing the moneys to buy me the shiny. RIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!

We watched Hotel Transylvania last night. It was better than I expected and had some genuinely funny moments outside of what they showed in the trailers. Adam Sandler's Dracula voice was annoying, just like any other time the man tries to do a character voice, but I thought the movie was otherwise enjoyable. We did not watch it with our kids though. I think my kids would have had nightmares about the monsters considering my son had them about "the cheese-touch" cheese after watching Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Genndy made this movie, I knew it was going to be good the moment I found that out.

Yeah, I watched it last night too. It was WAY too predictable and the story felt like it was rushing along at times but it's a fairly good movie. Hopefully Popeye turns out well so Genndy can actually do a movie he'd like to do.

The Tall T - another Randolf Scott western. This time based on an Elmore Leonard story... yes he's been making stories that get adapted into films for over 60 years.

I thought if Hotel Transylvania turned out well then he was going to be able to do a Samurai Jack movie.
He was contracted to a two movie deal with Sony Pictures Animation. He doesn't get to pick them, he is chosen for them. The first was Hotel Transylvania (which made money). The next is a Popeye movie because Sony owns the rights and they'd like to bring back Popeye as a franchise if they can. If THAT makes money, Genndy will have completed his contract and will have a lot more leverage in contract renegotiation, which will probably mean he'll be able to get a project he wants done.

In other words, if you want to see Samurai Jack: The Movie, go see Popeye when it comes out. It needs to make money or he's not going to have a leg to stand on with Sony.

It's a similar situation with Symbionic Titan: If the show gets good ratings on Toonami, Genndy has mentioned he'd be interested in doing a reboot/follow up series for Adult Swim. It's not a sure thing but it's a possibility.

Beasts of the Southern Wild.

We watched it due to the Oscar-buzz. The little girl's acting was quite good, but I didn't really enjoy the movie overall. It was just a downer. The whole movie, the characters, the setting, all just made me sad. Also, the symbolism was a little heavy-handed.

I just couldn't wrap my head around why those folks would want to live like that. Who enjoys/chooses squalor? I know some people do, but it confounds me.

Yesterday, I watched "Heart of America," a Columbine-esque film. Holy crap. Part of me wishes every preteen had to watch at least some of that movie (especially the bullying scenes). I didn't have the best childhood and was bullied in school by teachers and students, but this movie shows you how bad it can get. It's not all about the ending result, but rather about what drives a person to snap. Bullying in any format should never be tolerated. More than anything, I wanted to scream at the parents and teachers for either ignoring or not caring about the problems. Damn. Excuse me, I have to write some stuff.

It really was wasn't it? Granted I haven't seen all his work but...yeah this is a shining beacon. Whoever cast him for Ghost Rider was a PUTZ!

They cast him because Nicholas Cage is a HUGE comic book fan and was willing to work for cheap. They figured his name brand would help sell tickets... and to be fair, Nick Cage wasn't what was wrong with those movies.

Fun Fact: Nicholas Cage is a stage name and is named after Luke Cage (Power Man) from Marvel comics.

And his son is kal-l

more people need to watch Vampire's Kiss. It's so utterly bizarre. I have no idea what everyone making this movie was thinking.

The Avengers

I think when I saw this three times in theatres, I knew this would be one of those "I could watch this at any time, any day, no matter what" kind of movies, but having just watched it again just now, I think it's official. Fuck, I love this movie. While one could honestly nit pick it, it's in my opinion to be the perfect superhero movie. It gives you enough build up between characters to give a crap when they start fighting each other and then team up, it doesn't take itself completely seriously and realizes just how much fun these bigger-than-life characters can be, and just overall, fun.

A few things I realized watching it this time with Whedon's commentary:
1) Whedon is, and always will be, the king of entertaining commentaries. It's constantly informative and funny, and he's there to work, leaving little time for dead air.

2) He openly admits he hated doing the "cut the head off" ending, post-nuke, but said it was necessary to give them that final ending to the battle without having to clean up and keep fighting for another 17 hours.

3) He points out - quite rightly - that Hulk just comes out of nowhere during the final battle to do stuff. He leaps out of nowhere to beat up Loki and leaps out of nowhere to save Tony. And honestly, I doubt many will complain simply because it's the Hulk and he's already such a randomly violent character that it works.

All Star Superman

I love the comic. I mean, I really love the comic. But the movie...I don't know what it is. It's not that it's bad by any means. And I understand why they had to edit out some of the issues/chapters due to time and to make sure there was still time for the other major plot points.

I guess my problem with it is that everything just feels...stiff. The animation is stiff and lifeless. The voice acting, which is normally very good in these DC animated outings, feels stilted (with some exceptions, like Luthor, but even then, still stiff). It's like they tried to mimic the comic as hard as they could, but forgot to add some life into it.

One other complaint is one single line that they changed: instead of talking about rehabilitation of Solaris and saying "you'll live" when the Tyrant Sun begs for mercy, he responds, "I think I'm out of mercy." It's not just how cold it sounds coming from him, but it's basically saying that Superman killed. It just doesn't gel with anything else that the movie presents.

Huh. I thought it was a very good adaption of something I thought would be very hard to adapt well. Certainly far better than Superman vs. The Elite or whatever that mediocre thing was.

*shrug* To each their own, I guess. Personally, I enjoyed vs. The Elite a LOT more.

Really? Huh. I got about a third of the way through and stopped watching. Just bored me to tears. Maybe I'll give it another go if you think it was that good.

Yeah, Superman Vs The Elite was pretty good, but it has a bit of padding because they adapted a single issue story into a full length movie. That said, if you can appreciate the dynamic between a Golden Age hero vs. a Dark Age hero, as each criticizes the other (Superman disapproving of killing foes, The Elite unwilling to let villains hurt people again over personal ethics) then it's an interesting story.

Watched Seven Psychopaths tonight. I liked it, but I didn't know it was from the writer/director of In Bruges. Also, the trailers are completely misleading in terms of the tone of the movie. Still, pretty good and if you liked In Bruges, check it out. Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken are great as always.

I think the main issue I had with it was the story. I've seen it done in comics a million times, nothing about the movie seemed unique or interesting enough to warrant watching it. But you guys all seem to like it so I'll give it another try.

It was an interesting movie, but yeah, the story is old, even in the comics. I couldn't help but think they weakened Manchester by making his background story a lie. I thought it would've been more interesting to keep his background sympathetic, but still make him dark. I didn't care much for Menagerie's hypersexualization.

Taken
I finally got around to seeing this. It was pretty entertaining. Couldn't help but feel it was kind of like a porn. All the stuff at the beginning and end was like the pizza guy showing up at the front door. There were some really clever moves that the main character pulled.
