Hello, all... Well, I finally went and purchased me an iPad. Now I'm browsing Spotify to find music to turn on the background at my gaming group's semi-regular Pathfinder game. And I thought to ask for you folks for advice as to what music - albums, artists or even specific songs - I should take a look at. Currently I'm combing through soundtracks...

The playlists I've set up so far:

Absalom - music to be played when the characters eventually get to Absalom, the greatest city in the campaign setting's world. Think of Rome, Jerusalem, and other capitals ancient, vast and powerful. Currently includes:
* City of Rome from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
* The Might of Rome from Gladiator

Ancient Glory - something to give the characters a sense of awe and age if and when they start dungeon-delving in the long-abandoned ruins of ancient and glorious civilizations. Currently includes:
* Echoes of the Roman Ruins from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

Battle - music to put on when battle is joined and lives are on the line. Currently includes:
* The Sad Man With a Box from Doctor Who Season 5.
* Conan the Barbarian Suite
* The Battle from Gladiator

Chase - music to be played during chase sequences, something to put the sense of urgency and speed into the party. Currently includes:
* Chase the Target from Assassin's Creed: Revelations
* The Brotherhood Escapes from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

General - all-purpose fantasy adventure music, something to set the tone of high adventure. Currently includes:
* Age of Magic from Merlin
* Reunited from Merlin
* In Search of the Grail from Merlin

Harrow - music for Harrow readings (think of fantasy Tarot), visiting oracles, any sort of mystical encounters. Currently includes:
* You're The One from Carnivále
* Sofie Reads the Cards for Ben from Carnivále
* Notorious from Assassin's Creed: Revelations
* Investigation from Assassin's Creed: Revelations

Keleshites - music for the Arabic/Persian scenes involving the Keleshites, the campaign setting's fierce Middle Eastern equivalents. Think of Arabian Nights, Lawrence of Arabia, that sorta things... Currently includes:
* Old Baghdad from The 13th Warrior
* Die By The Blade from Assassin's Creed: Revelations

Military - anything to put on when the characters are dealing with the local military, whether that's the town guard or the gathered army. Currently includes:
* Klendathu Drop from Starship Troopers
* Spartacus main theme (the movie, not the series).

Tavern - music for tavern moments. Currently includes:
* Byzantium from Assassin's Creed: Revelations

Threat - Music to set up a sense of dread, of looming danger, an impending ambush... Currently includes:
* Doorway from Hellboy II: The Golden Army

* Master Assassin from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
* Cesare Borgia from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
* The Villa Under Attack from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
* Borgia Tower from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
* Countdown from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Tragic - music for moments of sadness, tragic fates and bittersweet victories. Currently includes:
* Signora Rosa Calvierri from Doctor Who Season 5.
* The Last Elemental from Hellboy II: The Golden Army
* Assassin's Creed Theme from Assassin's Creed: Revelations
* The Road to Masyaf from Assassin's Creed: Revelations

* An Unsubtle Approach from Assassin's Creed: Revelations
* You Have Earned Your Rest from Assassin's Creed: Revelations

Ulfen - music to go with the Ulfen, the campaign world's Viking equivalent. Think of roaring fires, Viking funerals and mead halls. Currently includes:
* The Great Hall from The 13th Warrior
* Rape and Pillage from The Vikings

Varisians - music for the Varisians, a human ethnicity of travelling wanderers, small-time criminals, scoundrels and tinkers. Think of gypsies or Sicilians, anything Mediterranean, passionate and slightly mystical. Currently includes:
* It's So Overt It's Covert from Sherlock Hormes: A Game of Shadows
* Romanian Wind from Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
* Diablo Rojo by Rodrigo y Gabriela (also the dance fight music from The Puss in Boots)
* Justin at Mr Chin's - Justin's Theme from Carnivále

Still to do: Elves, Horror, Run For Your Lives!, Victory Celebrations, Dungeons Deep

Dude....

I can't contribute here, but I'm curious, do you think this helps? I was considering it for my own gaming group, but traditionally we don't do this.

It's a tricky thing. If you can do well, it really adds to the experience. If you do it poorly, it can ruin it and you'll want to shut it off immediately.

Here are a few possibilities you might consider.

Ancient Glory
* Theme from Silk Road - Kitaro

Battle, possibly Chase (starts pretty easy, gets more intense)
* Theme from Requiem for a Dream

Well, considering my group is largely composed of tabletop newbies who are prone to start discussing outside-the-table things when I'm trying to set up the mood and the moment... I'll try whatever means available to get them to focus more on the game.

I used to do this with the DM game with Halforum members. Helped with battle initiation pauses. I also though the music gave a lot of suspense and emotion.

But I could be wrong.

We play music when the bard is singing to remind us to get our bonus, and on occasion as a synergy bonus if you can play an inspiring song while role playing a speech to troops before a battle.

Xenoblade music is great for peaceful travelling or town music. Also, Incompetech.com has a ton of free music that run the gamut from suspenseful and eerie to epic and intense to quiet and soothing.

Our old DM used a lot of music from JJ Abrams' Star Trek, mostly for battles from what I remember:

I think most of his in town / in tavern music was from vidjagames.

I will say, honestly, our current DM doesn't use music and I find it much better. There's no awkward, moment killing "Hold on while I find this song/ hit replay because this encounter is taking longer than I anticipated/ stop this song and find one more appropriate because you guys weren't supposed to finish that encounter that quickly"

You want some mysterious, weird music for the stranger parts of the world? Look up the Planescape Torment soundtrack.

This playlist has the whole thing.

Torment Playlist

Most of it is VERY ambient. It would work well for a Kellish dungeon or places like that.

None of that is on Spotify, unfortunately... but I think I can just hook it through my iPad's net in any case.

Ravenpoe ... I don't really think Rush works too well with a fantasy setting.
